When do you give up line drying for the year?

How do you decide when to give up line drying for the year? I managed to dry about 90% of this weeks laundry but had to put the rest in the dryer to finish off. I had been hoping for a bit of sun but it never really came out. Looks even worse over the next few weeks so should probably give up but we have a small house and no space to dry stuff indoors without tripping over it. I would put everything in the dryer over winter but have quite a bit of stuff that says not to and obviously woollens etc.

I really don’t, I still have a nice gap in there. I actually don’t like to overload at all because I feel they wouldn’t wash well then.

I started a thread a while back, I literally took pictures of my wash loads at one point.

2 loads a every Saturday. A dark and a white/lights, I have a 10-11kg machine.

You must have tiny beds!
The bed linen off a superking takes up the machine alone (4 pillowcases, fitted sheet, duvet cover and a throw).

i don’t wash the throw every time, it only goes at the bottom of the bed…

ToLoseWeightAndNotMyMind · 13/10/2025 19:08

I don't, it goes out all year as long as it's dry outside. Sometimes it needs a finish in tumble or airer

Houseoftrouser25 · 13/10/2025 19:14

Im with @Kitchenbattle
Daily washing ( unless incontinence) is a bit of a vicious circle.
I found my teens would just scoop up everything and fill the basket because " daily washing"
Once they did their own it reduced by 3/4 funny that 😂
I dont wash my duvet cover every week, I have a bottom sheet and a top sheet and duvet goes on top with sheet folded over,
My skin doesnt touch it so I only do it once a month.saves so much time and money.
Why would you wash a throw every week?
Towels-one per week, I dry on the heated towel rail in-between
Washing is Fridays only here

I forgot to add Im from an airing nation😂
Windows are flung open 365 with bed covers all pulled back so the bed airs nicely.

Now I'm wondering, does it use more water to wash daily and your sheets every 3 weeks or to shower every second day and your sheets weekly? Generally though, the people I know who wash their clothes less also wash their bodies less.

I’m not doing it to save water, I’m doing it because that’s what works for us. I work all week and also we have free electricity on a Saturday so it saves there. My dh showers daily, sometimes twice if he works out. I shower most days but I don’t wash my hair every time. I wash my hair twice a week. So a shower to me is a quick body wash. I had a quick shower this morning and I’m in the bath currently as i wanted to relax. I washed my hair on Saturday and I will wash it again tomorrow evening.

I usually dry indoors around October - March.

Laundry Drying Guide for London | Netweather

it is poor today but i have a load and will put it out until it rains

This said poor chance of drying for us today. The towels were nigh on dry when I just got them in. We've just put another load out to stay out overnight.

Shock

You know the thread has taken a sinister turn when somebody leaves washing out to get darked on.

Around now I stop, it was 18 on Saturday and sunny with a bit of breeze. Washing went out at 8am and was still damp at 3, the ground maybe dry but my washing never is!

EleanorReally · 14/10/2025 06:11

my washing did well on the line yesterday,

Soz. Overnight washing is how we roll here! 😬🤣

I’m in the same boat really. I usually try to keep going with line drying as long as I can, but once the forecast is just damp and grey for days on end, it stops being worth the effort. I’ve found that once we hit mid-October, things just don’t dry properly outside unless it’s a rare bright day with a bit of wind.
What I tend to do is still hang things out if it’s breezy, even if it’s cloudy, then finish them off in the dryer for 10–15 minutes. It’s not ideal, but it helps cut down on tumble time and energy use. For woollens or things that can’t go in the dryer, I’ve got a small heated airer which folds up when not in use — it’s been a bit of a game changer in winter.
If you’ve got no space indoors, it might be worth trying one of those over-the-bath racks or a small dehumidifier in the room where you hang things. I’d say once you’ve had a few weeks where nothing dries outside in under a day, it’s time to call it quits until spring.

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 14/10/2025 06:48

I tried yesterday but it was too damp outside and didn’t dry, no breeze either.

so finished everything off in the utility room, have slung up an indoor washing line and use a dehumidifier on full.

123456abcdef · 14/10/2025 07:05

I line dry unless it’s raining sideways, I have a covered area with line under. This time of year it’s more about getting it in before it gets damp again.

Greysowhat · 14/10/2025 15:28

I have washing out now. It's grey and damp and not a puff of wind. It's depressing 😞

tinyspiny · 14/10/2025 15:38

It has to be really nice , warm and no risk of rain for me so it ended in September for me .

Honestly, bring it in now. You might as well. This was me all weekend. Did a load yesterday and hung it on clothes 🐴🐴 next to the radiators but with a window open. Dried faster than the two loads that were outside all day.

Oldraver · 14/10/2025 16:16

I will try and hang out all year, though underwear goes in the dryer in winter.

I dry lots on hangers so it's easy to transfer to the airing cupboard to finish off

I did. The shirts were kind of half dry but a pair of jeans was definitely wetter. 😩

AngelofIslington · 15/10/2025 19:56

Today is the first day all week it’s not been grey and misty here so I hung out washing about 11, took it in about 4.30 and it was nearly dry, have hung it on the clothes horse to finish and will be able to put it away tonight. I’m in Scotland by the way

66babe · 17/10/2025 14:32

I’ve just brought washing in that went out about 0800 this morning - I’ve put it on the clothes horse but it will be put away before bed as it’s nearly dry
Love this
