Ever thought you knew someone only to find out something that really changed your views on them?

If so, what was it and what happened to your relationship/future interactions with them?

Ive just spent more time than usual with someone and discovered a whole side to them that I really don’t particularly like.
My view of them has altered so drastically that I’m thinking seriously of stepping way back from them.
Been around them for many years.
So many things now make sense having witnessed this behaviour.
Thought I knew that pretty well. I am very wrong about them.

Friend I met through a book club turned out to be a raging racist.

FamilyPhoto · 12/10/2025 06:05

We are no longer friends.

verycloakanddaggers · 12/10/2025 06:08

I don't think it's fair to ask others to describe the details if you are not willing to describe details.

In general, when you learn new information about someone, it is healthy and sensible to review the relationship.

SushiDisco · 12/10/2025 06:12

What did you find out that you don’t like?

Floweryfrock23 · 12/10/2025 06:19

The way they speak to people, the utter disrespect and superior attitude, passive aggressive comments and criticism of even the smallest mistake.
How everyone around them are terrified of making decisions, asking for anything because whatever it is it’s wrong and definitely not good enough.

I had seen very small flashes of this behaviour but not enough to make me think that they are like this all the time as I’ve not spent longer lengths of time with them.

When they come across as kind, thoughtful, caring and generous but that is just a cover of what’s really going on.

Is this a new love interest by any chance?

Kimura · 12/10/2025 06:32

I'd known someone for years, not friends as such but someone I see regularly through work. Lovely person, liked by ever. A few years back though I was out for dinner with them and the way they spoke to the waiting staff was absolutely vile, and completely unnecessary.

I've noticed it a few times since and when I mentioned it to someone, it turns out that she has a reputation for it to the point that people avoid going out for food with her. It's so bizarre and so unlike her usual behavior, but I definitely think less of her for it.

CrocsNotDocs · 12/10/2025 06:36

I was driving behind a friend one day and they threw a McDonalds bag out their car window. Instant dislike.

Similarly, I was driving home one evening and on my street carefully waited for a scrub python to finish crossing out of my lane and then saw my neighbour’s car in my rear view mirror cross into the wrong lane to run it over. Again, instant dislike.

I had liked both of these people up until then.

NoIdontWantNoscrub · 12/10/2025 06:41

Yes! There’s someone I know, who I enjoyed talking to but found out they’re a Tommy Robinson fan. Tried to deny being a racist but you can’t when you openly admit to going on his marches!!

Achewyhamster · 12/10/2025 07:00

My ex

We where planning our future and all was well

Then he put up a status on FB 'I know the bmp are pretty radical, but they have the right idea!'

I'd genuinely never heard of them as I was a skint single parent and was in my own bubble of kids/work/college and didnt have any time for politics (id heard of labour, tory, greens and lib dems-anyone else just didnt come onto my radar)

He then started mentioning a 'Tommy Robinson' and that's when I googled both

To say I was disgusted was an understatement and he was dumped

He seemed a lovely bloke until then-but he turned very nasty and I had to get legal action to get him to fuck off

Won't surprise anyone to learn he was part of the riots that went on in hull

Moominmoko · 12/10/2025 07:05

Someone I know and liked posted an anti immigration status on fb recently, one of those stupid copy and paste ones that are filled with false information. Then when someone pointed out the inaccuracies she claimed she didn't want to have a political debate.

Baffling and sad.

How strange that he was mentioning the BNP and Tommy Robinson in the same breath, the BNP were defunct years ago! You’d think he would have got behind Reform or at least UKIP in the intervening decade! Goes to show raging bigots need to move with the times! 😂

Darragon · 12/10/2025 07:31

My own was when I found out a bunch of my friends were actually MLM hunbots trying to recruit me to their pyramid scheme. They were really playing the long game.

Hanschristiananderson · 12/10/2025 07:45

Someone I have been friends with for years. During Covid we were texting daily so I got to know her better. Also started seeing more of her after Covid. She gets all her opinions from the Daily Mail and is terrified of going anywhere that isn’t urban. She thought walking in a scenic area near a zoo would put her in danger. At that point I realised she’s seriously unhinged. She also read about a wild cat being spotted in the city centre and became afraid to go out.

She spent hours and hours ranting about a family member treating her badly but is completely unsupportive of me when I am struggling.

So sorry
This was about 15 ish years ago
I definitely heard about tommy Robinson but could have been mistaken about it being him saying it
He definitely put up the status about the bmp
Either way,I saw him on the news during the riots-the charmer was doing a Hitler March (goosestepping?)and shouting at the building where people where in and hiding from them

Tommy Robinson was in the BNP in 2004/2005 so it is quite possible you are remembering correctly.
