Reading this article is heartbreaking.

Neighbour after neighbour heard the abuse and didn't intervene, didn't call the police, didn't help her.

That's so very sad. I remember wondering why my neighbours didn't call the police when I was assaulted on a regular basis. One of my neighbours was a Teacher at the DCs school so would have done safeguarding training and should have had a duty of care. I used to lie curled up in a ball praying she'd ring it through because she would 100 hear what was happening

Awfully sad.

I’ve read about similar things - mate crimes - where people befriend vulnerable people with an intent to abuse them. They often subject the victim to torture and they die the most horrific death. I’ve read about more recent cases but the murder of Suzanne Capper in 1992 was along these lines.
