Immigration and the green party

Honeybunny75 · 10/10/2025 11:00

I've always voted green, but probably not really looked as closely as I should of done at their policies.
They are saying they want a world with open borders .
I was just looking at their immigration policy.
How will that work, welcoming anyone who wants to come here ,how will that work when there's no houses to put them in .
I read recently that a huge amount of brits are homeless and in temporary accommodation waiting for a home ..so I can't see how we can take endless people in ...much as we may want to house the whole world,we are a small island

Can I ask what you mean by ‘keep the NHS’? Do you believe we’d end up with an American style system?

Again, it’s worth doing research rather than just listen to social media. Reform are on the record that they are not looking at anything like the USA but something closer to France which has some of the best performance metrics in the world. Why are people opposed to even having this discussion? Our NHS model is utterly broken and dysfunctional- it astonishes me that people think we can simply pour more money into it and that will somehow fix it. Labour spoke of ‘no more cash for the NHS without reform’ before the election but they are not reforming it, they are just rearranging the deckchairs on a sinking ship.

I guess I'm scared if reform get in , because of the risk to NHS changing and the risk to benefits in the future
My son's are disabled and whilst we are caring for them now ,and will try to leave our house to them ,at some point when I'm dead they will have to live alone and on benefits ..I'm not sure reform will have their best interests at heart

What a weird notion that all immigrants are put anywhere by anyone. The vast majority of immigrants, particularly the legal type, will find their own accommodation, rent somewhere like everyone else.

Yeah. I am still fuming that I wasn't informed on arrival about free house I was supposed to get 😒 Paying rent and mortgage like a local. Humph

I so agree with this. The NHS is in an awful mess despite money being given to it. Why do some think it’s our system which is broken or the US one.

The European models work very well. Why not those systems to review.

The Greens are nuts. Saw their latest leader on Question Time a few days ago. He came across as a right plonker. How can you ban landlords? Buy their houses off them? With what? And who will run them. The public sector generally runs badly.

Well ,when first of the boat they have to be given a place to stay ..and hotels are being fazed out ,which means them being placed in houses ,.so put somewhere in essence..

I think the plan is to make it difficult to be a landlord, especially landlords who don't live in UK ..but that is only my limited understanding

Really not keen on their new leader. Would not vote for them.

Zack Polanski as leader of anything very much is a terrible idea in my opinion, although I’m not surprised he got voted in as the Green’s leader. I do believe he’d be a disaster in government; legalising all drugs as a key policy, women’s rights, open borders, etc etc.

The fact that his hypnosis past follows him around does make me laugh every time I see it though 😀 www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/zack-polanski-green-party-hypnotherapy-b2819071.html

Our current system only doesn't work as it is not being properly funded, partial privatisation is part of the problem not the solution. When did privatisation ever make something cheaper, better run and more cost effective?

How much money do you think the NHS should get before we all accept the model no longer works for our population? A trillion pounds?

Honeybunny75 · 10/10/2025 11:28

Some thing else I read recently
Was that in the 70s and early 80s ,most people lived in council houses ,not homes they bought .
I don't know what the numbers of that are
So I guess conservatives really sold off a lot of houses

Yes they did. It was disgraceful.

StrongLikeMamma · 13/10/2025 05:56

Do you think they did that to get the people buying the homes to vote for them ... because if you didn't have some money you weren't able to buy .

I know of someone in my circle who when his parents were offered to buy their council home .he bought it ..at a massive reduction..and he bought his mil house too. obviously these properties in London rocketed in value ...
Then when they died he sold both houses at a massive gain ..huge gain ..he was already a millionaire to start with .
If lots of families were doing this as well ,no wonder there's no council houses

Sesma · 13/10/2025 07:02

I wonder if when some of the current government and their supporters bought their council houses they held their noses.

It is the most cost efficient health service in the world, it is not working because it is not being funded. How little do you think the NHS can have spent on it before we all accept that it's the defunding that is causing the problem?

I thought I'd have a quick look at how much government funding for the NHS compares to France. The French government spends 26% more per capita than we do and that covers 70% of the cost of healthcare, the other 30% generally being covered by insurance. THAT is why it is not working in the UK!

My whole point is that the majority of us immigrants don’t arrive here on a boat, we fly to Heathrow, go through border control, get a job, find somewhere to live (not necessarily in this order).

Curlewcurfew · 13/10/2025 08:14

It's a while since I've voted Green, but, when I did, I was involved in some of their policy reviewing processes and, from what I remember, they were clear that open boarders was not immediately practical, but an ideal or ethic to work towards.

They also made sure they reviewed policies and looked at research to ensure they were realistic and possible, e.g. economics for universal basic income, before announcing policies.

Not sure if they're as thorough nowadays, what with the anti-feminism factions, but you can check policies in detail to find out.

The NHS is notoriously inefficient. Even without being willing to discuss one funding model vs another, I would have thought most sensible people would baulk at the idea of just throwing more money at it. Procurement systems in the NHS and across the public sector generally are grossly wasteful.

You're wrong. The NHS is very cost efficient which is why we are held up worldwide as a system to emulate. What the NHS is, is underfunded. The main thing that causes inefficiency is privatisation, we DO NOT need more of that.

Yes, procurement systems in the public sector are wasteful, but that has been caused by the over-reliance and obsession with using the private sector to cut costs. It doesn't work.

38thparallel · 13/10/2025 13:25

He wants to legalise all drugs (heroin included) and abolish landlords. Make it make sense?

If drugs are all legalised does that mean we will be able to buy them in shops, like we can buy paracetamol or ear drops or whatever?
I cannot believe this is a good idea. Look what has happened in cities in California for example.

Sartre · 13/10/2025 13:30

The Rest is Politics covered the border issue really well last week, it’s worth a listen. The theory of open borders causing a sudden influx of migrants is nonsense. Just as when in the EU we kind of had open borders in the sense EU citizens could freely come, it isn’t as though half of Eastern Europe turned up over night. Immigration is a constant ebb and flow- people come, people leave. It’s unlikely to cause a rapid increase in migrants. It massively reduces inequality too and enhances economic opportunities. Research it and listen to that podcast.
