Flu jab

Has anyone had the flu jab this year yet? I’m due to have it today but I’ve had a bit of a cold all week so I’m wondering if I should postpone it, in previous years I’ve reacted a couple of days after I’ve had it with nausea, generally feeling rubbish and I don’t know if having it at the end of a cold would make it worse?!

I’ve just had mine. I was asked if I had any cold or flu symptoms, which would suggest it’s not a good idea to have it if you’re ill.

AndyMurraysCat · 10/10/2025 10:29

I’ve had it this week. I wouldn’t have it if you’re not feeling 100%.

Cloud44 · 10/10/2025 10:42

Yeah I think you maybe right, I just want to get it done out the way because I know I ll probably get some side effects again this year 🙈!

Have you had any side effects this week @AndyMurraysCat ?

I had it last weekend. Don’t know if it was related but I was sick later that day and generally felt rubbish for about 48hrs. Never reacted like that before and I’d felt fine beforehand!

MissingTrees · 10/10/2025 10:45

I had mine a week ago, no side effects. But I wouldn't have it if I had a cold, I'd wait a few more days.

WhatICallMyUsername · 10/10/2025 10:45

I had mine last Saturday and had no reaction whatsoever for the first time in having it for 20 odd years! Not even a sore arm! Which makes me wonder if I even had it 🤣

Disasterclass · 10/10/2025 10:46

I’ve had mine, so side effects, but I don’t think I’ve ever had side effects from it so I must be lucky

Cardomomle · 10/10/2025 10:46

Like pp said, postpone.
I had it last Saturday and felt rough for about 24hours, really bad headache, light headed, nauseous.
Took paracetamol and it went.

Winterscomingbrrr · 10/10/2025 10:47

I had the NHS one yesterday. Slightly sore arm last night and today. The advice is as long as your temp is normal for you then you should go ahead and get it as soon as possible.

Growlybear83 · 10/10/2025 10:48

I had my flu jab on Monday and haven’t had any side effects at all. I had my Covid jab last week and felt quite rough for a couple of days and my arm was mega sore. It was still slightly tender when I had the flu jab in the same place but it didn’t make it any worse.

JurassicPark4Eva · 10/10/2025 10:48

I had mine 2 days ago and have had zero side effects this year! Normally it puts me on my arse for 48hrs - sore arm, fever, headache, achy body etc but not a thing with the version. My mum had the same, and we're both usually rough with it.

When people are saying cold how bad is it?
is it like runny nose and sneezing but they are still at work and out and about or is it having temperature and being in bed?
I always thought that you shouldn’t do it if you have a temperature but ok with a sniffle.

MissingTrees · 10/10/2025 10:52

@pizzaHeart I think you're right.
I wasn't asked if I had a cold/temperature this time, and I'm not sure I ever have been. The only questions were 'have you had the flu jab before' and 'are you allergic to eggs?'

Didn't they ask you if you were feeling well?

I think it depends, it's just a case of overloading the system. It's a personal choice, but I've put it off when I've had a mild cold.

Itsasecretnow · 10/10/2025 10:54

I had mine a couple of days ago with a covid jab at the same time, in the same place. She asked if I had a temperature before doing them, could have possibly been due to either jab or both. I had a sore and achy arm start later that evening, and a slight ache in the armpit - so maybe a wotsit gland/node in response to one of them. Arm still sore today but less so. The pharmacist said that it’s good if you get a temperature afterwards as it shows it’s working. I haven’t, just the slightly sore and swollen underarm, which maybe was a slight response.

MissingTrees · 10/10/2025 10:57

@Cardomomle no, he didn't (it was done by a pharmacist in an independent pharmacy, I've gone to him the last few times).

Ok. I get it from the GP practice, they always seem to ask. I was advised against it one year because my glands were up.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 10/10/2025 11:00

I had it on Monday, had a sore arm all day and then spent all of Tuesday aching badly and generally feeling rough. Went to bed early on Tuesday and woke up Wednesday morning feeling ok again, just a mild soreness in my arm.

My husband had no ill-effects at all.

wintertime4me · 10/10/2025 11:02

My auntie had the flu jab then got the flu a week later.
My uncle never had a jab in his life had the jab he got the flu after that it was colds coughs and bugs none stop for months.
They both swore never to do it again.

Their choice. It's not compulsory. However, it is encouraged because all the data for the elderly and the medically vulnerable does demonstrate a significant benefit.

MrsBeltane · 10/10/2025 11:18

I had mine last week, no side effects. Do you have a high temperature? That would be the one of the reasons for not having it done

BIWI · 10/10/2025 11:48

I didn’t have any side effects this year, either - not even the sore arm which I have had before.

pizzaHeart · 10/10/2025 12:00

In the past DD or I often had mild cold on the day of the jab and our GP surgery always said it’s ok if no temperature, and it was always just the usual side effect of sore arm.

By the way I don’t mind people going one way or another with theirs. I was wondering if I missed any change in a medical advice or I was too flippant in my attitude to colds 🙂
