Car accident scam ?

Posting here for traffic.
was on the motorway 30 mins ago and traffic slowed down to a halt due to a junction. I stopped and suddenly a car hit my car. I was a bit shaken but ok. The guy was like what do you want to do cash or insurance? I was like i dont know im a bit shaken. I took a pic of the front of his car and we swapped numbers. And he was quite keen to get going because we were in the motorway and traffic was picking up
he texted me to say he’ll call me around 8pm tonight to discuss. I worry this may be a scam somehow… the back of my car is damaged but the car is functioning. My neck is hurting a bit from the shock but ok.
i feel because the first thing he sais was cash or insurance and then he was eager to go, it makes me wonder about a scam?
is there anything i need to be careful about? I need to think about or i need to do? Thank you

Then go through insurance only and not cash
That will weed a scammer out
it’s good you have pictures

If a car goes into the back of you in traffic it's always there fault. See what he says when ge rings you and take it from there Have you got his car reg?

goodnightssleepbenice · 08/10/2025 18:13

You have no need to speak to him, you pass his details onto your insurers and let them deal with it . So he hit you in the rear yes?

babylone · 08/10/2025 18:14

You absolutely MUST inform your insurance company, even if you don't wish to make a claim (although why wouldn't you?).
If you are injured in any way and it could be you have whiplash, there might be issues down the line when you may want or need physio.

babylone · 08/10/2025 18:20

Ok thank you i will do that

Generally a crash for cash scam will involve a car suddenly break checking/ reversing back into a car to cause a fault accident on your behalf, it seems unlikely he would accuse you of that behaviour but the sooner you report the accident to your own insurer, the better. If he's gone into the back of you, the fault will fall to him. Avoid any scam risks by going through insurance and you should be fine. He was probably just keen to get moving as it was in a dangerous location, did he give you his insurance details/reg?

pinkfluffybirds · 08/10/2025 18:25

I agree with what PP said - If a car goes into the back of your car 99% of the time they are at fault.

I would have the phone conversation with him and see if he’s willing to send you the money to fix it otherwise it should go to insurance - But this will likely affect your premium as well, even though it wasn’t your fault.

2dogsandabudgie · 08/10/2025 18:30

Agree with RottenBanana it's usually a scam when they reverse into you and then try and claim it was you who went into the back of thrm.

I saw a video once where this happened and 2 people got out of the car in front faking minor injuries like whiplash, holding their necks etc. It wasn't until they realised that the car behind had a dash camera that they suddenly got in their car and sped off.

I think your incident sounds genuine OP, but just go through your insurance and don't let the other driver try and persuade you otherwise.

babylone · 08/10/2025 18:41

Ive just checked my insurance and it is third party only. So i think i wont get any money to fix the car?
maybe im better off asking for cash then?

No, he is liable for the accident so his insurance will pay for the damage to your car and any other costs.

2dogsandabudgie · 08/10/2025 18:47

OP third party means that you are covered for repairs to your car if the other driver is at fault.

Walkden · 08/10/2025 18:47

Third party only means if you are at fault you don't get money to fix your car; only third parties are covered.

In the his case, the other party will be at fault so would need to claim on his insurance or if no fault your insurer may pay out and reclaim their coat from the other side.

The other parties insurers may settle quickly if you get their details as they can then negotiate and limit their costs

This is so helpful - thank you! 🙏
