Just read the tribute from the Queen and you can tell that they were firm friends.

I am really upset that we will never know the fate of RCB and the other inhabitants of Rutshire

I wonder if she might have left notes somewhere about what their ultimate fates were to be? Perhaps her literary executor will have something to share in the future.

Class was a great book “mummy says pardon is a far worse word than fuck” ran through my mind when my mil tried to instil “pardon” into our dds when they were young.

Oh yes, this classic line has always been one of my favourite Jilly-isms 😂

Henry8thHoover · 06/10/2025 18:55

The legend that was JC. How sad.

Apparently she has hoards of diaries at home . I’d pay good money if they were published . I’d bet she was gloriously indiscreet and an absolute hoot in them .

Extracts from some of her diaries are published - The Common years covers the period when she lived next to Putney Common in the seventies.

Would highly recommend to all Jilly fans, particularly those living in SW London.

Listen to her on the how to fail podcast - it’s quite recent. Lovely story of her leaving the first draft of one of her novels on a train it was all hand written and she had no copy…

I will haul my 10.5 stone bulk to the bar straighten my frizzy hair and will have a cold glass of white wine in her memory (am on hol)

Me and my sister have always been obsessed with this line! Poor Tory and her 11-stone bulk. I fully internalised it as a teenager and KNEW that if I got to be 11 stone nobody would love me unless I bought them their first horse. Literally nobody.

themoderncooks · 06/10/2025 19:04

No fan of Camilla, but that was such a lovely tribute. I rather like the sound of that for my herafter.

ICanSeeClearlyNowLorraineHasGone · 06/10/2025 19:05

No 😥😥😥😥😥😥

Genuinely sad about this. Thank you Jilly. Just thank you for them all ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

I love that book - Imogen and Octavia are still my go-to comfort reads. But I enjoyed Harriet, Emily and Bella too. That series of books were part of my misspent youth in the seventies and bring back so many memories!!! Happy days.

I love Imogen, I've read it so many times. I love the name books. Harriet is my favourite.

BestIsWest · 06/10/2025 19:09

I love Imogen too. I reckon I’ve read it every summer since I was 15 and I’m 62 now.

Which are your favourite bits? Lipstick on car? Apparently Matt based on Leo.

SoNotaRealHousewife · 06/10/2025 19:13

Noooooo, no more Rupert Campbell Black

I’ve read those many times, particularly living in Kingston and travelling through Roehampton as I did for many years . I loved her descriptions of many of the dog walkers , particularly when they fell out! I’d love to read some of her Gloucestershire diaries though .

Jilly based the lipstick on car incident on something she actually did after a boisterous party to the car of neighbour that annoyed her.
I think that might have been in The Common Years - I'll have to dig my copy out.

BestIsWest · 06/10/2025 21:32

The party is wonderful. Yvonne Bismark - The Iron Puke. The Botichilly in reverse.

Philandbill · 06/10/2025 21:33

Also feeling sad about this. I read Rivals in the library at university, hidden away in a study cubicle, so much more appealing than reading for a history essay.
I loved the name books too, especially Prudence and Octavia. Such easy comfort reads but also so funny and so sad in places.
And no more RCB.
I hope Jilly's children realise how well loved she was by readers.

Notonthestairs · 06/10/2025 21:37

Just rewatched Jilly Cooper’s In My Own Words documentary on Iplayer.

She mentions writing obscenities in lipstick on a neighbour’s horsebox - she wiped it off the next morning!

Imogen clearly her :)

evilharpy · 06/10/2025 21:48

I have never read one of her books but from everything I've heard about her and her writing today I am going to start with Riders as soon as I finish my current read. Loved Camilla's tribute. She sounds like an amazing character.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/10/2025 21:58

Very sad way to go too - I am aiming to be like jilly cooper- get to 88 and be mad as a box of frogs, but with all my marbles and still ‘kind of’ a bit glam - she always came over as such a fun person -RIP jilly , you will be missed. X

I envy you, having all of the Rutshire novels ahead of you! Just the thing to keep your spirits up as the nights close in.

Such sad news…she was so loved, and the Queen’s tribute is wonderful.
This Backlisted episode about ‘Imogen’ is really worth a listen…and celebrates Jilly as a truly great writer. From Andy Miller ‘RIP lovely Jilly Cooper, the only subject of a Backlisted episode to write us all thank you letters afterwards.’❤️
Thank you Jilly, from us all. Xx

I wonder if someone else will continue the Rutshire saga, it happened with Ian Fleming, Robert Ludlum etc after their deaths. Who would be able to do it ?

JoyousAsOtters · 06/10/2025 23:18

Loved Jilly especially Rivals which I’ve read countless times. Best namer of animals in fiction ever, and just so funny.

BuntyBeaufort · 07/10/2025 09:17

Thank you for the podcast link mrssmiling. I’ve been sitting in bed listening and laughing when I should be up and about. Love the idea that Jilly’s writing is a mix of Jane Austen and PG Wodehouse, and the reminder that sex is jolly good fun.
