People getting into my car, are they using my key fob signal? (My car is NOT keyless)

Someone got in my Vauxhall car last night and a few months ago.
It's possible I accidentally, didn't lock the car but it seems unlikely.
Could someone be capturing the signal from my key?
My car is not keyless, I have a key and I need to press a button on the key to open the car and I put the key in the ignition to start the engine.
Do I need a Faraday cage pouch to put my keys in?
I'm confused

It's completely possible to capture and replay a car key signal with an RF One or Flipper, yes. It's very easy to do this with inexpensive commercial hacking tools. Typically car thieves who do this target specific cars and take them, though. They don't just get in for a rummage. It's professionals stealing to order.

Yes.
People go up and down our road opening cars this way about once a month.

You need to store car keys in a metal tin.

Yes, buy a faraday bag or box. My car was broken into several times until I bought a faraday box. I’ve used it for five years now and not had a problem since.

Can someone confirm that I need a Faraday bag if my car is not keyless!

YES. My car is not keyless. It was broken into several times by thieves who were able to clone my key. That is why I’ve used a faraday box for five years and have not had a problem since I’ve been doing so.

Thank you. I've ordered one.

We keep ours in the fridge. no idea if that actually work though. dh seems to think it does

BaronessBomburst · 05/10/2025 20:43

A microwave is, not sure about a fridge.
Try putting your mobile in the fridge and get DH to call it. If it rings it's not a Faraday box.

My DH leaves my car unlocked all the time, saves me faffing about with a faraday box Hmm

I keep my car keys in an old tea tin for this reason

Biscuit tin here but it's the same principle!
