Help! What 80s thing does this smell of?

I have just stood in Waitrose for ten minutes inhaling deeply and it's driving me mad. If you have this particular candle or are near anywhere that sells Wax Lyrical candles, PLEASE put me out of my misery.

As soon as I smelt the candle, it hit me with a massive and familiar feeling. I knew it was something from the 80s - it's none of the old Body Shop smells - but it feels cosmetic rather than decorative/air freshener or even food related.

It might be a roll on gloopy lip gloss that came in a clear glass bottle/tube with a red pattern on the bottle but I am not sure. And if it is that - what was the lip gloss please?

Mindful this is very niche. You need to have been a teen in the 80s and be able to access the exact candle, but its driving me mad - so much so that i might need to go back to Waitrose to smell it again... So MN, I turn to you.

ps. Whilst the picture uploads, it is Wax Lyrical Flower Market candle.

Constance Carroll roller lip oil is what you’re referring to

they did various flavours of which cola was probably the most popular. Bubblegum a close second

BeMintFatball · 05/10/2025 14:40

I can only think of the cherry flavour lip gloss . Are sure you don’t mean Anais Anais? That was a very 1980’s perfume.

MedievalNun · 05/10/2025 14:44

Constance Carrol from me too - or one of the Impulse body sprays. They had a floral one that was quite distinctive & the packaging did have red patterns on.

Can’t comment on your candle I’m afraid, but I loved those roller ball lip glosses. I was addicted! There was a chocolate flavour I think.

Holliegee · 05/10/2025 14:54

I think most of those lip glosses were actually eaten by teenage girls reading Jackie magazine whilst wearing hoop earrings and licking their lips ferociously.
90s smells I can think of that might smell like that is exclamation perfume (white bottle with black exclamation mark) or Lou Lou perfume which smells so chemical I think it affected my lungs with long term wear.

Pinkywoo · 05/10/2025 14:58

Could it be an Avon lip gloss? I had roll on ones from there, and also little tubes if roll on perfume.

I still wear Anais Anais! Grin

I was sure I was going to be irresistibly kissable wearing those when I was 14. 😁

Oh wow, Constance Carrol , that a blast from the past.

dancinfeet · 05/10/2025 15:04

you can still get those roller ball style lip glosses on Amazon- not sure about the candle if that’s anything close to the smell you were thinking of.

The candle looks like it would smell like m+s florentina which my mum used to love!

GellerYeller · 05/10/2025 15:27

I loved those roll on lip glosses. Cherry and Cola flavours! Maybelline Kissing Potion or Constance Carroll from the indoor market!

I instantly thought of the indoor market in my home town when I saw the words “Constance Carroll” too!

EWAB · 05/10/2025 15:44

Pinkywoo you have reminded me …

I was looking after my 4 year old niece and my cousin came over with a little gift bag . I turned my back for a minute and my niece had put roll on perfume oil on her lips which immediately blistered. Five hours in A&E and a sister-in-law who then hated me!

Niece is a doctor now though! Brother long since divorced!

Timeforabitofpeace · 05/10/2025 17:01

I used to like Anais Anais.

SlightlyJaded · 05/10/2025 17:43

Sorry for lack of replies - had to go out. I will google Constance Carol now to see if that was the lipgloss I was thinking of. I really REALLY want someone to smell the candle and tell me if it is the lipgloss that it smells off or if it’s something else that I just can’t put my finger on

I used to have the lime green impulse body spray. I’d love to smell that again. Actually, I may need to go and smell the candle while thinking about the green impulse body spray, in case it was that.

this is the lip gloss. I’ve found a picture but not the brand name. Is this Constance Carol?

Still need to work out if it’s the right smell though. Not Cola and not cherry.

It's not Constance Caroll that I was thinking of. It's Max Factor Kissing Potion. Came in multiple flavours.

Still not sure if this is the answer to my initial conundrum but at least I've solved that bit.
