Surely you don't carry your phone everywhere?

Every time there's a discussion about civil liberties, for instance at the moment with ID cards, people always say, why are you worried they can track you by your phone anyway. But that implies that people are always carrying their phones.

I have a phone, I have to for work, and it's very useful outside work as well. I sometimes use it for navigation, and on certain instances I might take it with me if there's a chance I'll need to liaise with someone while out. Super helpful technology.

But surely people aren't taking it to the shops, or on the school run, or out for a walk in the countryside?

My entire life is on my phone, I run my business via it, my diary is on it, I used it for filming for my pub, social media both pub and personal, calling suppliers, doing my accounts, you name it, it's on my phone. It would be like having my arm cut off to not have my phone. Yes that's ridiculous but it's very true.

I would leave the house without anything BUT my phone! It's my keys, wallet, watch, camera, calendar, maps, shopping list, plus all kinds of other apps... To be honest why are we still calling them 'phones' as tho that's their main purpose 😂

Yes this. I use my phone for everything. Can’t remember the last time I used my actual bank card to pay for anything outside my home. I use it as a rough step counter too so yes it comes everywhere with me as every step counted is precious!

Use it to bash the window out?

Seriously, Google suggests you can get a digital key on Android phones.

Thissickbeat · 06/10/2025 15:33

Tesla's can be operated by a phone app.

KiwiFall · 06/10/2025 15:34

I take my phone everywhere. You say you take it if a chance you’ll need it. But how do you know if you could have an accident and need to call for help? Also I take mine because others may need me in an emergency not always I will need to use it.

Mummamap · 06/10/2025 15:39

That really is what a mobile phone is for. Yes you take it with you - everywhere!

Well clearly I'm the weirdo here. When the heck did everything change? I don't think people were doing this 10 years ago?

Um, well smartphones were pretty new ten years ago. Things change. Where have you been in the last ten years?

I'm 50 and have seen every technological change from Pong to pagers to modern phones. How can you be unaware of it?

I don't take my phone when I walk my dog and often go to the shops or out for the day with DH and leave my phone at home.

I don't use it to pay (and never would as I have a bank card). I don't see the need to always have my phone with me. Don't take it upstairs when I go to bed either

Authentication with facial recognition on your phone is far more secure for payment and less likely to be cloned/read than a bank card.

Loads. BMW, Tesla, Volvo, Hyundai, Kia, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Honda etc

It’s pretty commonplace in new models.

Assuming this isnt a wind up, and even if it is,to the people saying they haven't anything worth stealing inc OP; burglars don't always walk into your house and decide you have nothing worth stealing and walk out again.

If high value / quick sale stuff isnt immediately obvious then they'll ransack the place, turn everything upside down, break things, kick cupboards in, relieve themselves on your floor (yes, really) and generally make you wish that capital punishment still existed, such is the feeling of violation. NB not literally on capital punishment.

So 'it wouldn't happen to me' is not the best approach. Get some contents insurance and lock your door fgs.
And, yes, everyone I know has their phone with them.

Oh yes. My friend who was burgled came home to find they had taken her pants out of her drawer and wanked in them, shit in her bath and smeared it around, and killed her fish with bleach.
The police thought it was someone pissed off that she was away with her fancy new car they had intended to steal.
Never caught.

I’ll leave my phone in the car when I go into a shop, but that’s about it. I thought I was unusual for not always carrying it with me around the house.

How desperately sad.

Oh how superior you are. It’s not “sad”, it’s just normal
modern life. It doesn’t make you a better person to
pretend you’re still living in the 1900’s.

Did you can get a wireless charger for your car OP, no need for plugging and unplugging...

Smartphones weren’t pretty new ten years ago. 2015.

The term “smartphone” dates from 1997. I got my first one in 2002. Even the iPhone has been around since 2007.

Hollybollyhughes · 06/10/2025 16:57

I didn't want a phone but getting trains or concert tickets we had to. I certainly don't use my phone as some do, in the moment eh?
My nephew takes his to the loo, disgusting. I was a team leader, if one of the team left theirs at home, it was a disaster. No it wasn't, do your job, get on with life and stop scrolling, you knob. Feel better now.

No, I’m not worried that they might happen if I haven’t got my phone on me. They might happen whether I’ve got my phone on me or not. It’s often just easier to deal with them if I’ve got my phone on me. Why wouldn’t I want to make my life easier?

Exactly. An accident will still happen if I have my phone or not. The difference is I can then phone 999 for help and it might save someone’s life/make a real difference to them.

I’m not “worried” about what might happen in front of me. I don’t think about terrible things potentially occurring all day long Confused I get on with my normal life, but it means on the small chance something does, I can be of more use than a chocolate teapot.

Not sure what byd means, but my car is due a service next month so I will ask about getting a digital key. My last phone wouldn't have been able to do this, but the one I bought this year does.

I genuinely had no idea you could operate a car with your phone. Fancy that!

Old fashioned phone - landline?

I don’t k kw anyone who still has an actual landline phone in their home. We have a line for broadband but no phone device as it was only ever scammer calls anyway. My Dad in his 80’s has given up his landline for the same reason, so many scam calls, and just uses his mobile phone now!

Dutchhouse14 · 06/10/2025 17:16

I have it with me if I'm driving anywhere.
If I'm at home or at work it's not on my person but lying around in the house or in desk drawer.
Usually take it on dog walks but not always.
I'm not very good at charging it so does sometimes run out of charge when I'm out.
DH on the other hand does always have his phone with him in his jeans pocket, however this does not mean he will always respond to a text or answer a call!

RampantIvy · 06/10/2025 17:18

I no longer use the inbuilt satnav in mt car because it doesn't have traffic updates.

I do a lot of motorway driving and need to know if there are any road closures or delays, so I always have my phone plugged into the screen for long drives even if I know the way.

So your smart phone helps you get free donuts. Then once in a blue moon it's useful in an emergency. And you carry this thing around with you all the time and I expect you have to charge it every day. Maybe you have to check that it's fully charged before you can go out. And you pay hundreds of pounds to do that.

I've got a mobile phone but it's not a smart phone. I've got a laptop that I use for banking and a few other things. I don't have a contract. It's just pay as you go. When I'm out of doors I use it for telling the time and for taking photographs. It has keys not a touch screen so it's easy to use. It's quite small and goes many days without needing recharging.

Sigh. I’m sure that poster does a LOT more on her phone than just those examples she gave. As do all of us.

It doesn’t cost “hundreds of pounds” to charge a smart phone 😂😂😂 omg how funny.

Zodiacrobat · 06/10/2025 17:23

JennyShaw · 04/10/2025 21:55

You wouldn't be pleased if she needed it and it needed recharging, or she needed it but wasn't able to co-ordinate her fingers well which is something that can happen with people who get ill. Wouldn't she be better off with something different than an iPhone, something that doesn't need to be charged so much and something with keys rather than the touch-screen?

My Dads phone has an automatic function that detects a fall and will call for help. Modern tech eh?

He can easily turn it off if it mistakes his active gardening movements for a fall.
