Anyone in their 50s remember this from primary school??

I’m 58 and I remember putting on a play in primary school all about the wooden horse of Troy.

It had songs - it might have just been a series of songs now I think of it but there could have been spoken parts too.

Im assuming it wasn’t just our school but nobody I’ve ever met seems to remember it.

Only asking because the songs have been known to lodge themselves in my brain as ear worms from time to time 😁

DDs’ school (English Speaking school in Oman) did a fantastic Captain Noah And His Amazing Floating Zoo. Decades ago now, but I still remember a lot of the songs. Really wish we had a video of it!

Oh I'm so pleased! I got the name wrong, it was Eric Withams not Eric Williams. I did it at a summer camp in the early 90s I guess and it was directed by him! Absolutely lovely man.

Oh! I was just being amazed thst Eric Eilliams, POW who wrote The Wooden Horse also wrote this, and it turns out he didn't, so I don't need to be confused now.

There were lots of plays like that available, not just from the BBC - we did one that was about some South American (Inca, maybe?) girl called Imoharu, who was a 'selfish glutton' and involved about 60 kids lined up with a pair of claves each.

If you search for school play Trojan Horse, you can find scripts that might be related.

Omg- we did this one. I can still remember some
of the songs! "I'm hungry, I'm starving. Leave her be and let her die". And the one about all the different animals in the jungle- "He is black and white and his bill is big and bright and I'd like you now to meet him.... he is curious too and he's staring at you. It's our dearest friend the toucan as you see"!!

My daughter is currently doing a play about Troy at school. She's 7. She plays a credulous Trojan. Her line about "what is the worst thing that could happen?" is actually quite funny...

Puntadalima · 05/10/2025 22:21

Michael Hurd was the composer of many of these - did anyone else do Hip Hip Horatio about Nelson? I’m now trilling “Emma Lady Hamilton with face so fair…”

BauhausOfEliott · 05/10/2025 22:58

This sounds like it might have been connected to a schools’ music and drama radio programme… might have been Singing Together?

We didn’t do a Troy one but we did do two plays with songs that were from a radio programme like that. It had a different story for each series and it came with accompanying booklets with music, words and pictures that got handed out to us. We did one that was based on Dick Whittington and had a lot of educational content about life in mediaeval London and another one which was set in Mexico but I can’t remember what the story was.

I’m 49 so not quite in my 50s but a similar vintage.

Well this nerd is disappointed the thread wasn't about Fletcher Maths and the Function Machine! Just me, then?

Btw we did Jonah and the Whale.....if that's of any interest at all!

Toofficeornot · 05/10/2025 23:52

No sorry. We did Joseph and the technicolour dreamcoat.
I was going to try out as josephbas they decided to cast it as female. I had two friends create a backing dance to my audition song and then I chickened out at the last minute.
I always wonder if I had gone for it would it have been the start of my hollywood career??

TheBirdintheCave · 05/10/2025 23:56

I’m 39 but we definitely did stuff like this. My brother’s class did one about Eurydice. A lot of them came with song books. One my class got was about little arctic cleaning gnomes 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ and I remember another about Sherlock Holmes.

Norisca · 06/10/2025 05:53

JamDisaster · 04/10/2025 10:32

But there was another one, my year did, I think, Noah's Ark, my brother (2 years older) did Joseph and the technicolour dream coat.

Noah, Noah, don’t do any more
Your boat’s a laughing stock
But Noah went on building his ark
And his hammer went knock knock knock

Captain Noah and his floating zoo! Love this

I am 59, don't remember that one but think that at my primary the teachers wrote (at least) one or two themselves. One was a nativity show that started with a song to the tune of Eye level "o come along, come along, listen to my song I will tell you a story true"
Another had a song that started "when I was a baby cannibal on my mother's knee" and went on about being heir to the tribal crown..
As I write this one about Dick Whittington is starting to bubble up.

One that was bought in at middle school was "The Noah Jazz". I don't remember much about it now but a 3am in a couple of days one of the songs might come back to me.

We did this nativity:
"Oh come a long, come along listen to our song, and we will tell you a story true.
Born was a child in a world that was wild, and his future no one knew"

I still sing it every year and no one has ever heard of it!

WonderfulSmith · 06/10/2025 06:27

I’m so excited that other people know Moses and the Burning Bush and that the Rameses song has been stuck in so many heads all these years. I’d love to hear it again.

I'm in my 60s and we did Noah. My sister's year did the Delilah one. I didn't like school much but I loved singing and have such happy memories of performing Noah.

About 20 years ago my DDs school did a play about Robin Hood with a very catchy song about Maid Marion's Ladies. There was also one about the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

squashyhat · 06/10/2025 09:19

"Whennnn.....Jonah sank into the sea he closed his eyes and prayed
Oh Lord I'm very sorry that your word I've disobeyed
If you will only come and save me I will do as you command
Instead of treading water let me tread upon the land
Go down Jonah deep in the ocean
Go down Jonah deep in the sea..." Grin

SydneyCarton · 06/10/2025 10:48

@JJWT We did Fletcher maths as well - wasn't it orange booklets with odd drawings? And later SMP cards that you took from a box and worked through - always good if you were doing length or volume and got to muck around with the metre wheel or throwing water around. I was pretty good at maths and had to go and get my cards from the class above me, which meant (a) their teacher held me up to them as a Shining Example and (b) I got duffed up in the playground afterwards Hmm

@WonderfulSmith I tried searching YouTube to see if anyone had uploaded a recording but no joy Sad

GoldenMalicious · 06/10/2025 10:53

Yes! I remember that... and I have a copy of the music too! Here's a reminder of the songs...

Troy was once a swinging city, but bad times are on it now, more's the pity...

Nothing but war for ten weary years...

They'll have to think of a way to get inside, how can they take the Trojans for a ride...

Ulysses, draw up a plan, Ulysses help us if you can...

Planks and beams for the body of the horse, four great trunks of wood for legs...

Most of the Greeks have sailed away, pretending to give up the fight...

(Two songs that we skipped - The Trojans Doubt, and The Priest's Warning)

Yes! No! Yes! No! Some say yes and some say no, the wooden horse of Troy has got to go...

(This Chap We Found and My Name is Sinon - we didn't do these ones either)

(Into the City We'll Take Its, and The Moving of the Horse - skipped these too!)

We've gained a horse of wood, what a trophy we've won...

(Night Falls over Troy - gosh, we skipped loads!!)

Brave Greek soldiers from inside the wooden horse, fully armed with swords and spears...

(Meanwhile at Sea - yeah, skipped this one too!)

Troy was once a swinging city, but that's the end of it more's the pity...

Look at you now Troy, aren't you a mess Troy...

Now it is the Greek's turn to celebrate, Ten years of war have ended now...

A Horse of Wood! A Horse of Wood! Troy city fell because of a horse of wood!

Nothing But War for Ten Weary Years, that's brought back a memory. Thank you.
Are you able to share any pictures of your music?
Is Night Falls over Troy the song about the oracle?
Thank you.

Same age & no don't remember I'm afraid but wanted to say love your username😃

Shouldn't it be 'I can see Deirdre now Lorraine has gone'?

Malbecfan · 06/10/2025 15:13

SMP!! I remember that. I finished it too - I was probably a swot.

Since you're all here -
Not a play but a children's game . They all formed a conga chain , like a figure of 8. They were chanting : ' In and out the dusty bluebells '. There might have been more but that's all I remember.

What was it all about ?

Here’s a snippet of Nothing but War. I can’t see anything about an oracle in Night Falls over Troy - the lyrics begin with ‘Slowly settles the dark on the city of Troy’ and ends with ‘Simon, Sinon the Greek’ if that rings any bells.

i wonder if the oracle one is the Priest’s Warning - looks like four parts of conflicting views e.g. ‘Burn it all up’ and ‘Take it into the city’.

Anyone in their 50s remember this from primary school??

Was the radio programme " Singing together"? I have looked on the internet where years and years of these songs are collected but could not find this.
