Anyone in their 50s remember this from primary school??

I’m 58 and I remember putting on a play in primary school all about the wooden horse of Troy.

It had songs - it might have just been a series of songs now I think of it but there could have been spoken parts too.

Im assuming it wasn’t just our school but nobody I’ve ever met seems to remember it.

Only asking because the songs have been known to lodge themselves in my brain as ear worms from time to time 😁

The Exodus songs (Ramese, Nile-o...) are from this, BBC Watch. I still have the vinyl and in fact can still sing every word!

Jonah Man Jazz! Loved that one.

I remember my sister learning "Jonah, Jonah, listen to me Jonah" from Jonah Man Jazz. And watching Great Big Groovy Horse on the telly."Come, fly with me, across the Aegean Sea".

Nineveh city was a city of sin
The beat bands playing made a terrible din,
And the people all dancing rock and roll,
Well the Lord, when he heard it, said, “Bless my soul!”

😄

”Nineva city was a city of sin, the jazzin’ and the jivin’ what a terrible din, beat groups playing rock and roll and the lord when he heard it said bless my soul”. Quite of lot of the words and music taking up valuable space in my brain!

Oh, I remember it differently!

WeaselsRising · 04/10/2025 19:01

Noah Noah don't do anymore
Look out man there's a shark!
Oh ship ahoy there sailor boy
But he kept on building the ark,
Noah,
Kept on building that ark.

Emori · 04/10/2025 19:07

We did Chanticleer!

Was there a song by a dove in that one too or was that a different one? Maybe about Noah?

High fly
Peace in the sky
Ring sing
Joy do I bring

I definitely remember a dove but I don't know which play.

DancingOctopus · 04/10/2025 19:47

I remember it. It was a radio programme which came with song books. A particular favourite song of mine was about the Oracle. If I remember correctly, there was a lyric that went " When the midnight chimes begin to ring" in a minor key.
There was also the line " I distrust the Greeks even when they come bearing gifts".
I think we did this in our third year of Junior school when I was 10.
The next year it was about the first hot air balloon flight and had a song that started " Ta ra ah, boom de aye,
I don't know what to say".
I loved these singing classes.

I think we sang this in infant school. We put on a show of it.

WonderfulSmith · 04/10/2025 19:50

It might please you all to know that the BBC still do this. Every year the put out a performance for schools with the music, scripts and enough parts for a class. Remember this if you ever moan about the licence fee.

Malbecfan · 04/10/2025 20:06

I sang Jonah Man Jazz and Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo when I was at Junior School and have taught both recently to my y7 & 8 choir. They loved them!

When I was at school in the 1970s, you weren't allowed to be in the choir until 2nd year juniors (year 4) so I missed out on Daniel Jazz and haven't got round to buying the music. However, when I was in the infants in a different school we sang a musical about Hans Christian Anderson and I can still remember some of the songs:
I'm Hans Christian Anderson, I've many a tale to tell
But though I'm a ? cobbler I'd say I tell them rather well.
I'll mend your shoes and I'll fix your boots when I have a moment free
I'm a purple ? I'm a mountainside, I'm a quarter after three.

Thumbelina, Thumbelina, tiny little thing
Thumbelina dance, Thumbelina sing...

Will have to get googling!

Emori · 04/10/2025 20:17

Did they make that into a film?

Malbecfan · 04/10/2025 20:18

Yes, it was called Hans Anderson (according to Google). The song "Inchworm" is possibly the most famous - I remember it being on radio 2 in my mum's car!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/10/2025 20:21

ThreePears · 04/10/2025 17:51

I genuinely have no recollection of ever being in any school plays at all.

You might have been ill - or, as we see on here every year, some parents withdraw their children because 'they wouldn't like it' or because it would be in the evening and there were other children to look after/evening jobs.

Yorkshiregold · 04/10/2025 20:31

I remember the Trojan horse one. I think it ended with a song that went something like this
A horse of wood
A horse of wood
Troy city fell because of a horse of wood

Emori · 04/10/2025 20:33

That sounds like a football chant!

Emori · 04/10/2025 20:35

@Malbecfan I remember Inchworm!

@WonderfulSmith no moaning from me - I think the BBC is excellent value for money. How lovely that they're still doing this.

Nineveh city was a city of sin
The beat bands playing made a terrible din,
And the people all dancing rock and roll,
Well the Lord, when he heard it, said, “Bless my soul!”

😄

The Lord he pondered a subtle plan
He looked around for a righteous man
Saw Jonah sitting neath a pineapple (?) tree
And the Lord He said that's the man for me.
A righteous man that I can trust
(Something Something) dust..
......
I'm certain sure, sure, sure he's the man for me.

Talk about memories unlocked!
We also did the Samson one, but I don't remember any of it

HowYouBrewin · 04/10/2025 20:44

I definitely remember the Samson musical and a Noah’s Ark one.
Anyone remember Trig Trog?

Welcome Trig Trog come entertain us
Welcome Trig Trog come sing a song
welcome Trig Trog come entertain us we have waited far too long
clap your hands for Trig Trog (x2)
welcome Trig Trog come entertain us we have waited far too long

Also there was one about a boy called Ramoo? Something about him going through the jungle and then a bit about “hush, what’s that? A parrot yellow, red and green shrieks aloud and flies away”. That’s all I remember about that one 😁

NooNakedJacuzziness · 04/10/2025 20:45

We did the Sir Spence one too - it was called Sir Spence and a dragon called Horace. All the knights had names like Sir Spence, Sir Loin and Sir Cumference. I was a soldier!

littleburn · 04/10/2025 21:00

Arrrrrrragghhh · 04/10/2025 17:40

I quite liked the radio music lessons but we didn’t have them long. I remember singing “ ocky tocky Ona” as my star turn which was something to do with Eskimos .
Came with nice picture booklets too to learn the songs.

Was that Time and Tune? You’ve just stirred a memory for me and I did some googling https://www.broadcastforschools.co.uk/site/TimeandTune
I remember doing the 81/82 programs - Aladdin, Child of the Dragon and Squeaker Squirrel Show

Puntadalima · 04/10/2025 21:11

BacktoKingscote · 04/10/2025 15:21

We did Jonah Man Jazz and Hip Hip Horatio, same composer I think. Also something about chickens in a farmyard? I came on the thread to say I didn't remember your Trojan Horse one, but that lyrical quote 'Paris you're a rat' has completely rung all the bells. I can hear the tune.

I think we might have gone to the same school…..the year before I arrived they’d all done Noah, “by 2, by 2, by 2, by 2// repeat endlessly”

MyElatedUmberFinch · 04/10/2025 21:15

We did Noah and Joseph.

merryhouse · 04/10/2025 21:18

Rowgtfc72 · 04/10/2025 17:16

@merryhouse oh my god! I'm seven again and singing the Chanticlair song!
Thank you.
We did Persephone and the underworld but don't remember any songs.
Moved to Catholic school aged seven and a half and these all stopped although I can still sing 'Il et nait la divine infant'.🙂

EEEElay NAY luddy VEEE nong FONG

mogtheexcellent · 04/10/2025 21:18

We did a musical about Rameses.

InSpainTheRain · 04/10/2025 21:18

I am 60 and remember this. Weird question but this is such a clear memory for me too - was the school Beauherne?
