Anyone in their 50s remember this from primary school??

I’m 58 and I remember putting on a play in primary school all about the wooden horse of Troy.

It had songs - it might have just been a series of songs now I think of it but there could have been spoken parts too.

Im assuming it wasn’t just our school but nobody I’ve ever met seems to remember it.

Only asking because the songs have been known to lodge themselves in my brain as ear worms from time to time 😁

Meek as a kitten and mild as a lamb
Samson bound in chains
Soft as a mitten and tender as ham (?)
Something something
Oh what a tragedy
All because of a female snare
Lost his head when he lost all his hair
Walked right into the tigers lair
Samson bound in chains.

I had no idea that was all up there until I saw your post!

We did one about Jonah and the Whale as well which had a really catchy song about how sinful Niniveh City was!

Something Something = Hors de combat!

There was another one, quite jazzy:

Sampson was a hero in the days of old, The spirit of the Lord had made him bold, The muscles on his arms stood out like iron bands, And he had big hands...

Loved that one!

Arglefraster · 04/10/2025 16:37

47 but school was stuck in the dark ages.... I have vivid memories of singing "Troy & Troy.. & Troy & Troy ...& Troy & Troy again" about trying to bring the walls down

Was that Rooster Rag?

His name was Chanticleer
such a handsome fellow he was Chanticleer
monarch of them all
his name was Chanticleer
red and black and yellow feathers
see him standing crowing on the wall

and the hens chorus "every time we lay an egg we think of yoooooou..."

....Just for you we'd lay a dozen more.
When we hear him crowing in the silence of the night we know that he is heralding the dawn.....

point is to the fire without delay
indicate the blaze and we’ll be speeding on our way

point us to the fire without delay!

Jonah Man Jazz has taken me back to something I had long forgotten. Thank you all.

Allthesnowallthetime · 04/10/2025 16:50

I was going to say I didn't know it.

But @PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle has posted and I do remember this!

Mumdiva99 · 04/10/2025 16:51

I remember Music Time - it was my favourite.
I remember a set of songs about the Shetland Isles and also a story about a native American called Imohero (forgive the phonetic spelling.)

Unsuurisweird · 04/10/2025 16:53

We did one with the song ‘oh Ulysses, oh Ulysses, are you still sailing on the seas’

hrthrt · 04/10/2025 16:57

@Jasmin71- I'm wondering if we were at school together?! I now have a 'Sir Spence! Sir Spence! His valour is immense!' earworm...

GlastoNinja · 04/10/2025 16:59

I can’t remember it but nearly scrolled past the thread thinking it was for people a generation about me, before I remembered that I’m in my 50s.

So that was nice.

ICanSeeClearlyNowLorraineHasGone · 04/10/2025 17:02

“We’re taking the horse inside. We’re taking the horse inside we’re taking the horse inside the city walls”

“we’re heaving and we’re pulling up the hill towards Troy… we’re heaving and we’re pulling up the hill towards Troy”

I don’t remember that song.
I remember this one. Proper show tune,

R A M E S E S
Is he the greatest?
Yes, yes, yes.
He’s Rameses, you’d better do what he says
He’s Rameses, he’s the one to obey
He’s Rameses, get down on your knees he’s the top man in the land.

Who do we adore?
Rameses!
——————-? (I’ve forgotten this line)
Who’s the one you cry for?
Who’s the one you die for?
Rameses, yeah, Rameses!

Oh fuck, I played Rameses when I was 8, I'm now 49 and didn't realise that was still in my brain.

R-A-M-E-S-E-S
Am I the greatest
Yes, yes, yes!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane 😀

Should add some more..

I'm your top man
I'm your boss man
I'm your god, I'm your king
I'm your everything
So I am the one you must fear
Cos I call the shots
Around hereeeeeee (jazz hands)

Rowgtfc72 · 04/10/2025 17:16

@merryhouse oh my god! I'm seven again and singing the Chanticlair song!
Thank you.
We did Persephone and the underworld but don't remember any songs.
Moved to Catholic school aged seven and a half and these all stopped although I can still sing 'Il et nait la divine infant'.🙂

Oh my goodness! Yes!

And that was a proper show tunes kick line style bit as I recall.

Is the Jonah one the one that has
‘Come listen to my tale
Of Jonah and the Whale,
Way down in the middle of the ocean.

A-preaching he should be
In Galilee you see
To disobey a very foolish notion.

But God forgave his sin
Salvation entered in
Way down in the middle of the ocean.

Oh yeah! Way down in the middle of the, way down in the middle of the, way down in the middle of the ocean. Oh Yeah!’

Hors de combat! (still don't know what it means) :)

Samson, cut that hair, you want to be with it but you're really a square

Be guided by that golden rule

Something something

You should play it cool

Samson snip it off
you think you’re smart and quite the toff
in fact you are mistaken man
you look like mutton dressed as ham.

If only you will come and save me
I will do as you command
Instead of treading water
Let me tread upon the sand

And after swimming very hard for three days, if not four,
The whale came near to Nineveh and grounded on the shore
Whereat it gave a little shudder and its jaws were widely flung,
And Jonah came a-strolling out upon its mighty tongue!

Well thanks everyone for this walk down memory lane! I’m 56, we did Jonah Man Jazz when I was about 10 and I swear I still remember every word!
Also loved Singing Together with Johnny Morris.
(Chinga linga Tonk Tonk, anyone?)

Other year groups in my school did the Moses/Rameses one, Big groovy horse and Theseus and the Minotaur.
What great days!

I tried asking ChatGPT about this for you and here is its suggestion.
You could try putting in some of those lyrics that you remember and see if you get a hit.

One candidate that matches a “Horse of Troy / Trojan War / Troy / Paris / Helen” theme is the rock-opera Paris by Jon English and David Mackay.

Here’s the song list (from the concept album / published version) for Paris:

Paris
(Jon English & David Mackay) — Song List

Act I / CD1

  1. Overture
  2. Prelude (formerly “Chorale”)
  3. A Head Without a Heart
  4. Straight Ahead
  5. What Could Go Wrong
  6. Perfect Stranger
  7. A Long Time Coming
  8. Business
  9. The Leader
  10. Paris in Court
  11. Any Fool Could See
  12. Thief in the Night
  13. Thoughts of Love
  14. Trust in Your Heart
  15. Welcome Home
  16. Hell or High Water

Act II / CD2

  1. No Turning Back
  2. For Better or Worse
  3. Ten Years On
  4. The Greek Camp
  5. What Price a Friend
  6. Love Has Power
  7. Two Titans
  8. The Beggar
  9. Ulysses Prayer
  10. A Horse With No Rider
  11. Inside Outside
  12. The Balance Shifts
  13. Oh Paris
  14. Finale

If the school musical you saw was indeed Paris, some of those titles (especially “A Horse With No Rider”, “Inside Outside”, “The Balance Shifts”) might ring bells.

If you like, I can compare this list with what you remember (even a fragment of a lyric or tune) and check for variations from school adaptations (edits etc.). Do you want me to see if there was a UK school version or a variant list?

rose69 · 04/10/2025 17:40

Great songs. Will add twigwidge carol of the Christmas tree to my advent repertoire.

how about the village pump one “Ching a ling tonk tonk”

Arrrrrrragghhh · 04/10/2025 17:40

I quite liked the radio music lessons but we didn’t have them long. I remember singing “ ocky tocky Ona” as my star turn which was something to do with Eskimos .
Came with nice picture booklets too to learn the songs.

TheLemonOtter · 04/10/2025 14:54

My sister did one with the lyrics "Theseus slay the minotaur/if you don't slay the minotaur then you're in trouble/ so you better slay the minotaur on the double" - super catchy and have never managed to track it down!

I did this one! I was just dredging my brain to remember it and then read your post!

Mumteedum · 04/10/2025 17:48

We did musicals each year in primary. I don't remember anyone dressing up but remember having the penny whistle. Result!

We did one about Boudicca (though everyone said ' bow di see ya ' then) and one about the Montgolfier Brothers.
"Tara rah boom dee yay ...vivé Montgolfier....etc"

Remember that banger 😂

ThreePears · 04/10/2025 17:51

I genuinely have no recollection of ever being in any school plays at all.

DiscoBob · 04/10/2025 17:53

We definitely did lots on Romans, I think a whole year was themed around them and ancient greeks. This was when I was about six in early 80s. Not sure if we did a play about the horse but we definitely had the story.

OhDear111 · 04/10/2025 17:58

Not all schools would do the same play! Of course teachers can choose plays if they wish. The NC doesn’t dictate or forbid plays and Christmas ones are still
there. My DDs did ones written by the teachers. Perhaps the Trojan Horse was?
