Has anyone else just woken up with this digital id randomly downloaded onto your phone??

Well, what digital ID app for a start?

smallglassbottle · 02/10/2025 14:27

😂 of course not. The surveillance hasn't started yet!

So you’ve downloaded the gov id check, which nothing to do with digital id and it didn’t magic its way to your phone. You will have downloaded it either to login to gov.uk or accidentally

What does it look like when you open it?

To create a drama thread about digital id when it’s got nothing to do with that? Or to login to gov.uk previously,

if you didn’t download it someone with access to your phone did, it has not magically appeared on your phone, someone has pressed download.

You really honestly think that a few days after it was announced, the gov has been so efficient that’s it’s ready to go. And it has been stealthily downloaded onto your phone with no announcement on what to do with it, how to register it etc?

Or do you think maybe a while ago you downloaded the app that logs you into gov.uk (which is what that is), and now you’ve forgotten you’ve done it?

FreyaB84 · 02/10/2025 14:58

I've just had a quick look on my phone and it shows up on the app store with the option to download it. It seems like it's an app used to help you confirm your identity when logging into GOV.UK. Either you or someone with access to your phone will have downloaded it at some point.

I figured it out I pressed a link on my child benefits 🙈 I guess I didn’t read the link properly!

It is nothing to do with the digital ID that has just been announced. I had it on my phone too - I had to download it. I think it might have been for when I renewed my daughter’s passport but I can’t remember now. I no longer need it so I have deleted the app.

put your tin foil hat back in the cupboard!

I had to verify my identity for Companies House and I've now got two near identical apps if it makes you feel any better. Dreadful process, it just took me around and around in circles between the website and the app. store.
One is Gov.UK One Login and the other Gov.uk. They both appear to take you to the same place which bodes well.

I already have a digital ID with Post Office, which is government certified as secure and used by lots of private sector and public sector bodies. Why government feel the need to create another one is beyond me. Private sector apps will only access the data you allow them to which in my case is just my driving licence so I have it on me at all times with my phone. I try not to carry it about as if my bag it stolen with my house keys my home address is there to allow anyone to traipse in quickly.
