If someone says, oh I like your dress, are you expected to tell them where you got it?

What do you think

I've done it in the past. So I think that's a normal response. I try now just to say 'Thanks!' when complimented because I think I can come across as gabbling. But if it's me asking I will now say 'where's it from?'

MumChp · 02/10/2025 00:21

No only expected if people ask

SeptemberNCing · 02/10/2025 00:21

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.

captainoctopus · 02/10/2025 00:21

Seeing as I buy most of my clothes from charity shops these days it's not a lot of help to them if I do.

DramaAlpaca · 02/10/2025 00:25

No. Just a simple 'Thank you!' is fine, like you'd reply to any compliment.

Librariesrule · 02/10/2025 06:57

I usually do, especially if it was a bargain. I had a manager who would just say "yes it is, thank you"

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/10/2025 06:58

I say 'Thank you, I made it'.

TheChosenTwo · 02/10/2025 07:02

Never really thought about it but yes I just say ‘thanks, it’s from x’. If they like it they might want one for themself!

labamba18 · 02/10/2025 07:04

I say ‘thank you it has pockets’ and proceed to show them said pockets

This too. Always pockets.

OhNoNotSusan · 02/10/2025 07:06

sometimes, if it is new, i say, So do i

PersephoneParlormaid · 02/10/2025 07:06

If you’re a Northerner you tell them where it’s from and how much it cost. For everyone else, no.

Same! I LOVE a be-pocketed dress!

How funny Ive noticed everyone always highlights if their dress has pockets too 🤣🤣🤣

whimsicallyprickly · 02/10/2025 07:10

Honestly? I usually say "thank you, it's really old" because most of my clothes are!

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 02/10/2025 07:14

I do sometimes. I don’t think it’s expected as such.

Quatt · 02/10/2025 07:16

I used to respond with things like “thanks, I got it from x in the sale, was only £20” until a colleague said to stop telling people it was a bargain, just accept the compliment and retain some mystique!

if someone asks I’ll tell them

Smartiepants79 · 02/10/2025 07:17

Well I often would. But not always. I’m not sure I would say it’s ’expected’. Just something polite to say back.

This made me laugh, so true 😂

Then apologise if you got it three years ago. Although this might just be me as I’m always a bit devastated when I see a lovely piece of clothing and realise it’s not sold anymore.

Like the gap dress a friend wore ten years ago, I still think about that dress.

Try Vinted!

SparklyCardigan · 02/10/2025 07:36

Yes, I only say that to someone if I want to know where said item is from!

BitOutOfPractice · 02/10/2025 07:39

I might do. Or I might say something else about it like I’ve had this years or it has pockets or thank you I love it too or I forgot I had it or some other inanity.

Bumblebee72 · 02/10/2025 07:43

I've told people like their dresses before. I just meant that I liked their dresses. I was a compliment no further investigation intended. I think with the "me to" movement men no longer mention things like this, which has lead to women also not really complimenting each other anymore.

starfishmummy · 02/10/2025 07:58

Being British, isn't the correct response to say something like "thanks, I've had it years"
