If someone says, oh I like your dress, are you expected to tell them where you got it?

What do you think

I always add it in plus will self deprecate it in a stereotypically British way.
This old thing …25p from ebay … free out of skip etc even if it was actually quite expensive and I love it.
I can’t seem to stop this as my default setting. It’s ridiculous!

I say ‘thank you it has pockets’ and proceed to show them said pockets

This

Bringitonicancope · 02/10/2025 08:11

"Expected to"?
That's really strange.
Surely if the person want to know they ask, as in " I really like your dress. Where did you get it?". And then yes I would tell them.
But why would you tell them if they don't specifically ask?

EBearhug · 02/10/2025 08:16

I'm a pockets person.

But you don't need to say more than thanks.

WatchingTheDetective · 02/10/2025 08:21

If it is the sort of dress that person would wear I'd definitely tell them.

Brightbluesomething · 02/10/2025 09:15

The usual response is thank you. I sometimes say where I got it from if it was a bargain. Yes I’m a northerner. But if it was pricy I wouldn’t, that would looks gloaty.
Always point out pockets….

My usual answer is “Thanks, it’s had time to come back into fashion!”

Wowsersbrowsers · 02/10/2025 09:24

I think normal response is the pockets one or the bargain one. If neither maybe something like 'thanks, I just knew I had to have it!' Although really why someone would say that about a dress with no pockets I don't know.

If they are looking for evening wear I do direct them to one of my favourite charity shops - it's in a village near to an army camp. They get the officer's wives cast-offs - amazing selection of cocktail dresses!😁.

FuzzyWolf · 02/10/2025 10:11

I don’t think it’s an expectation rather than a normal response because the only other response is obvious so sounds rude “yes, I like it as well which is why I’m wearing it”.

Shetlands · 02/10/2025 10:16

The correct response is along the lines of "Thank you, it's lovely isn't it."

I wouldn't tell people where I bought it unless they asked. I can't always remember anyway so might say "It's probably vintage Monsoon".

Rubyupbeat · 02/10/2025 10:21

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/10/2025 06:58

I say 'Thank you, I made it'.

Same here, as it's usually the case.

Came here to say this!

CurlewKate · 02/10/2025 10:26

Why wouldn’t you? I’m always particularly pleased when I can say “Thank you-it’s from the Oxfam/Heart Foundation/Red Cross shop” -it almost always is!

vitahelp · 02/10/2025 10:49

PersephoneParlormaid · 02/10/2025 07:06

If you’re a Northerner you tell them where it’s from and how much it cost. For everyone else, no.

As a northerner I can back this up 😁

PersephoneParlormaid · 02/10/2025 11:29

As it’s currently 56% saying yes to this question, can I safely assume the membership to MN is weighted more in the Northerner area? 🤣

JaninaDuszejko · 02/10/2025 11:44

I would always say 'thanks, pockets, bargain' in that order. Pockets more important than how cheap it was obviously.

I assume you all know about

Always tell the price if it was cheap. Never if it was expensive 😀

RoverReturn · 02/10/2025 11:54

I guess that's a common reply to that sort of question. I once replied that it was from a charity shop and the person I was talking to looked aghast at this.

unsync · 02/10/2025 12:19

I just say thank you to compliments. The only exception is if I have made the dress. In which case I tell them it has pockets (which is why I sew) and that I made it myself. The cheeky fuckers will then ask if I can make them one. 🙄 Nope. I do tell them which pattern I use. Sewing is really not that difficult.

I like this reply.

I don't really like responses along the lines of 'Oh thanks, I've had it for years.'

I think that response slightly demeans the compliment and the complimenter can feel a bit silly.

Myoldbear · 02/10/2025 16:59

Oh sorry, I realise I haven't answered the question.
No, I don't think you need to say where you got your dress unless you want to.
I would if I was directly asked though.

Kdub · 02/10/2025 17:08

I'm trying not say, thanks its only primark/asda! And just say thanks 😊
