If someone says, oh I like your dress, are you expected to tell them where you got it?

What do you think

No, I would just say thank you.
If I said to somebody “I like your dress” that is all I mean.
I I wanted to know where it was from I would say “where is your dress from?”

clipboardz · 02/10/2025 17:20

It depends how it is asked because you can often gauge that the next question will be "where is it from".

MyPinkTraybake · 02/10/2025 17:23

The unwritten rule among women is that you are supposed to say:

Oh this, I got it in a charity shop for £2 / supermarket / it's just a cheapo from New Look / I found it in the back of a cupboard / I've had it for 30 years / it was on sale.

This is how I've always observed it to be 😂. Don't ask me why.

henlake7 · 02/10/2025 17:23

I just say thanks, only say where it from if they ask.

Ive said that before knowing that the dress that looks lovely on someone else would look godawful on me! So some people just mean it as a way if saying 'you look nice'.

MyPinkTraybake · 02/10/2025 17:25

I'm guessing it's because someone once didn't want to reveal where their dress was from, then it just caught on 🤣

I always add it in plus will self deprecate it in a stereotypically British way.
This old thing …25p from ebay … free out of skip etc even if it was actually quite expensive and I love it.
I can’t seem to stop this as my default setting. It’s ridiculous!

Oh this it's made out of bin liners and I found it on the corner of the street 😂

If you’re a Northerner you tell them where it’s from and how much it cost. For everyone else, no.

🤣 is it just a northern thing?! I didn’t realise but yes, where it’s from, how much if it’s cheap. No mention of price if not

hahaha.. Yes, that is me. I have been told off for saying how much stuff cost before though. I don't know why because I am not flashy. Some of my stuff is a couple of hundred max but mostly these days it's 'thanks it's from Whistles and was £12 on Vinted'.

MyPinkTraybake · 02/10/2025 17:32

Sometimes it's cheap polyester that has been cut nice and gotten away without looking cheap. That's the case with a lot of my clothes. In those cases I'll tell them a story about it e.g. thank you I bought it for x and its been so versatile.

I'm a 1/4 Yorkshirean (rest of me is a Southern softie) and I do this. Where, how much and when. Bonus chat for pockets or especially nice buttons.

I always say - It’s from X shop, it was only £10 IN THE SALE !

I never buy things full price and am always over the moon with a bargain.

MidnightMusing5 · 02/10/2025 18:06

I read and article once that said if you respond by telling them where you bought it from, then that would mean you are lower class.

That would be me 🙋‍♀️

I’d rather be lower class than rude, it’s shameful to not not share a good dress source. Especially if it has pockets!

Rocknrollstar · 07/11/2025 22:24

You don’t have to tell people where your clothes come from. Most importantly don’t say ‘this old thing’. Stand in front of a mirror and practice saying thank you.

Well we're all northerners round here and the only person who mentions the price is MIL, but she does it with no tone or context so I have no idea how to respond or what to do with the information.

She'll literally say 'thanks, it was £25 in Asda' but I can never tell if she means it was a bargain or bloody expensive.

hopsalong · 07/11/2025 23:24

People never like my cheap clothes. (Most of them.) Only the odd expensive thing, which I would have got in the sale, but would then be embarrassed to name!

Ha ha! Yes I’m a northerner and I’m confused this is even a question 😛

I say ‘thank you it has pockets’ and proceed to show them said pockets

This is the only acceptable response!

Jasperis · 08/11/2025 09:02

I said it to someone at a wedding recently as i thought it might be something dd would like. The person responded that they got it from a boutique. I would have liked to know where she bought it but she didn't want to say. I find it weird.
