I like something that makes you think

don't like anything too cheesy if it's fiction

TIA

Last one at the party - Bethany Clift

A very English Scandal by John Preston came under the category of a book that really made me think. Its Nonfiction, about Jeremy Thorpe's murder plot, and is a good eye opener about the complete incompetence of MPs back in the 70s - ie nothing changes.

Also After the Party by Cressida Connolly (fiction)

I’ve just finished that. It’s really stayed with me.

Definitely worth a read. There are a few points of the background detail which she goes into in a bit much detail and repetition, but it’s an easy read with a twist. I think the original The Appeal was the best one. This is probably on line with The Examiner. I wasn’t impressed with The Twyford Code.

I wasn’t impressed with The Twyford Code

Me neither, it was terrible

I think until The Examiner, which was good, both follow ups to The Appeal were pretty crap.

Stephen king - thinner

Love this book - have you seen the film adaptation? 😁 I don’t know what it is with SK books but they always make such terrible films, however I’m trying to remain hopeful about The long walk and hope they manage to get the sinister vibe across.

It was my first Janice Hallett and it put me right off. What of her others is worth it?

The Appeal is her first and that’s excellent, I’ve read it a couple of times and I hardly ever re-read these days.

And The Examiner, her most recent, is good.

Don’t bother with the other two.
They’re all standalone novels.

The short stories that have been made into films are usually pretty good but the novel adaptations seem to all be awful!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 04/10/2025 10:02

@Ddakji I just reread the review I gave Twyford Code on 50 Books Challenge thread like 3 years ago and I said I wouldn’t touch the author again with a barge pole so maybe I should stick to my guns!!

If you haven’t read the original The Appeal, do read that, I think that is the best.

Just finished playing nice J P Delaney which I really enjoyed.

Thank you, I've just bought The Appeal so I'll try that first.

Issac and the Egg, Bobby Palmer - about a man consumed by grief, it’s clever and interesting.

Trodincatsickagain · 04/10/2025 11:44

Juice - Tim Winton. Set in the Australian outback, this is post apocalyptic fiction with a heavy dose of the ravages of climate change. If you liked The Road, you’ll probably enjoy this.

No I have not but agree with most adaptations.

however he wrote the screenplay himself for green mile and shawshank which were excellently done. Hopefully he will have had input for the long walk 👌

I wasn’t aware of that - both amazing films.

Affinity by Sarah Waters. Read it after seeing a recommendation on MN and really enjoyed it.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. This one was a gift and I really enjoyed it.

The Unspeakable Acts of Zina Pavlou based on life of the penultimate Woman hanged in England.
