I like something that makes you think

don't like anything too cheesy if it's fiction

TIA

I really enjoyed The Wager by David Grann. It's non fiction but as gripping as a novel.

I loved The Wedding People by Alison Espach - I was expecting trashy fun but found it a bit of an emotional wringer. The Safekeep is also excellent, in a very different way (bleak, saucy, shocking). Both v g reads. I also always find I like William Boyd novels much more than I think I’m going to.

Currently reading Olive Kitteridge which is surprisingly good

Still Life by Sarah Winman - I’m loving it. So well written, poignant but so funny too. Actually miss the brilliant characters when I’m not reading it!

Bring the house down by Charlotte Runcie.
Thought provoking story about cancel culture and the role of critics with believably imperfect characters.

Wasps' Nest. The Inheritance. Frenemy. Re-read some Agatha Christie at a co-worker's insistence.

All good. And, more than one, I know.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 02/10/2025 00:23

The Examiner by Janice Hallett. It looks like a cozy crime mystery but is far creepier with far more twists.

Bbq1 · 02/10/2025 00:47

I loved The List of Suspicios Things. Currently reading Lady Macbethad

I just read The Family Upstairs too, love Lisa Jewell. Will have to read the follow up.

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish was a good one.

About to start Our Beautiful Mess by Adele Parks.

The Paris assignment by Rhys Bowen... set in WW2... I'm making my way through all her books and love them

Biography with lots of background information about the middle east plus just an amazing woman:
Queen of the Dessert: The extraordinary Life of Gertrude BBell by Georgia Howell

Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors.

It’s described on the cover as a modern day Little Women

staringatthesun · 02/10/2025 07:21

Wally Lamb's The river is waiting is a brilliant book. One of my favorite books this year.

If you' like thrillers /twists, I recommend Will Dean, particularly The Last Passenger and Firstborn. Frieda McFadden writes fantastic novels full of twists with a dark undercurrent.

Love everything by Janice Hallett. Treated myself to her new one The Killer Question and it’s brilliant so far. Also really enjoyed Everything's Fine by Cecilia Rabess - modern love story in America . Very thought-provoking but also hugely enjoyable.

I had the exact same thoughts about ‘The Wedding People’! Thought it would be more of a trashy beach read from the blurb and front cover. It was actually really well-written, thought-provoking and I missed it when I’d finished!

List of Suspicious Things was also really good.

I read Blue Sisters and it was okay, a bit pretentious I thought.

Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano is also about sisters and I loved it so much that I’ve bought copies for my friends and family so I can talk about it with them. 100% recommend!
