My best friend when I was a teenager was an only child, so I got to go on loads of days out with her and her parents. The best was probably a shopping trip to our nearest big city and then they treated me to dinner.

Greece all inclusive for 2 weeks!

My friend's family took me to Exmouth for the day. They had a beach hut where we had scotch eggs and tea made on a little stove with a whistling kettle.

She and I had a swim in the sea and then played amongst the beach huts. The best bit was meeting an old man who had a dog which was wearing a little sun hat and had a pipe in his mouth. I have told people this story for 50 years now and nobody believes me about the pipe but it's true.

Blackpool pleasure beach! We never went as a family as too expensive but i went with a few different friends in my teens. Often they would pay for rides back when it was tickets. It was great back in the 90s

I went on a couple hols with one friend, tho they didn’t take me as in pay for it. But they did take me along…

Butlins! I'd never been before then and it seemed very glam 🤣 (might have had quite a sheltered life!)

Friend's parents took me to a medieval battle re-enactment weekend. I was about 9. Never seen anything like it. Never been since. I loved it. The costumes, the horses, the cooking displays. My friend and I were enthralled.
And eating ritz crackers in the car on the way home.

Cornwall for a week with a schoolfriend at 13 as she was an only child, we went windsurfing and tried scuba diving, it was fab.

I'm an only child and spent every weekend or at least it seemed like I did as a young child at my friends house.
I went on more than a few days out with them on a weekend but the one time I remember the most was when I went with my friends family to meet up with her cousins family because together they had rented a beach cottage.
I remember we ate fish and chips near the beach at a restaurant, and we had so much fun in the sun standing in the waves holding hands so we wouldn't be knocked over.
Those were such happy days I don't even know how long we were gone probably a week but it has stayed in my memory for years.

My friend's dad had a caravan at California Cliffs in Norfolk. Always really loved going there.

Wales with a friend's family. We found a smugglers ' secret passage on the beach like a real life famous five story. Also going to a different friend's aunt's house and going to a take that concert

I went on 2 skiing trips to Italy with my best friend when we were 14/15, I also went to Spain for a week with her family. She came along with my family for a week in Spain as well, and a few days away to Alton Towers. We had a great childhood together. Very lucky!

Went to London with a friend, her sister and Dad (her mum had sadly died the year before). Was blown away as weekends with my parents were more B&Q, visiting grandparents and the occasional walk in the local countryside. Still love London today, am lucky enough to travel for work sometimes and also plan a few visits each year.

A campsite in Italy with my best friend and her parents when I was 12. We went by bus because her mum was afraid of flying. Took us 2 days but it was awesome. First time I was ever abroad too. To make it even better, my parents bought my younger sisters a kitten while I was away because they felt bad I was on holiday and they weren’t so I came home to a new kitten in the house!

Alton Towers with my friend and her parents when I was 11 in 1984. My family couldn't afford theme parks so it was the first time I had been on roller coasters.

Day trip to the isle of Wight with another friend a few years later. I lost touch with this friend but found out she had died of cancer age 20.

Showing my age here. When I was about 12, my neighbours took me to see The White Heather Club. It was a variety show, featuring music, dance and comedy.
On the way home, my neighbour asked me what was my favourite part. Much to her amusement, I said the clockwork dancers. I honestly didn’t know they were real people! I love going to the theatre, particularly musicals but I’ve never forgotten seeing The White Heather Club!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/10/2025 20:20

I was taken to see Mary Poppins at the cinema with my Mum's friend and her children. It remains a favourite, and infinitely comforting, film of mine to this day ❤️

GotMarriedInCornwall · 02/10/2025 20:52

I have nothing to add to the conversation except I bloody loved Camelot.
I was gutted when it closed.

Many, many magical trips to Djouce Mountain in Co. Wicklow. Friend and I and friend's dog used to roam for.miles all over the mountain. We'd be gone for hours.
