Will this lambswool top unravel if I cut the arms?

Will this lambswool top unravel if I cut the arms off? The arm bits stick out & flap too much, I'd prefer it as a vest.

I presume I'd have to roll a little hem & hand stitch it?

I love sewing but I make many mistakes Grin

I'd carefully unpick the seam tbh

CardGameFun · 01/10/2025 18:39

It's tight. I think you're probably right tho Confused

I think I've left it too late to wear tomorrow Blush

MN keeps saying these are sensitive images. Hmm

Hence the delays, apologies.

Can you tuck them in and tack them down?

CardGameFun · 01/10/2025 19:07

Thanks Suee. I might just do that temporarily & see what it looks like.

Seamstress and knitter here. Cut half an inch from the seam all the way round, then overcast the edge by hand to secure the cut threads.

Turn turn it to the inside and hand stitch with herringbone stitch for stretch. It will be fine that way. Don't use a machine to sew it as it will get stretched out.

😲 Thank you Blappen! 😍

I've just watched a herringbone stitch video. That's a new one on me. 🤓

I didn't even think about it not stretching 🤯

Hooray for Mumsnet ⭐

No problem, good luck!

Ta-da! This took me far too long to finish this little project. I confess I cut the arm flaps off & wore it for a while like that until I had time to stitch it Blush

I wouldn't recommend that approach. The underarms felted & I had smaller hems to work with Grin

Thank you @Blappengrap for your wise words just at the right time Easter Smile I really enjoyed learning the herringbone stitch & I love this top now! 💚

Well done, it looks very neat and tidy and a successful reworking - herringbone stitch always makes me think fondly of my late mum who taught me to use it for hemming.

Aw thanks @StanfreyPock Smile As a usual 'bodger' I'm quite pleased with the outcome too.

I love that you have memories like that of your skilled Mum! I'm very envious. I missed any kind of tutorage like that & feel like I'm always floundering around Grin

Have a lovely day x

Thanks, however speaking of bodging, Mum had worked and learned her trade in a tailoring factory in the 50s, where they always just threw all the thread and fabric offcuts on the floor to be swept up at the end of the shift.
She never cured herself of the habit, so the house was quite a sight after a bout of sewing!

CardGameFun · 11/11/2025 21:15

@StanfreyPock Sorry, totally missed this!

That did make me smile, thank you. I have a lovely vision of the post-project carnage Grin

Sewing is in your genes then 🪡🧵💪🏻

If I go back far enough there are plenty of gloveress ancestors in my family. I'm just waiting for their skills to arrive in my fingers Blush

Ah I'm so late to this! It looks fab! You've done such a good job. That herringbone stitch looks very neat.

CardGameFun · 07/02/2026 15:58

Thank you @Blappengrap for giving me the confidence to even attempt this. I wore it again yesterday 😇

I have so many sewing projects that I don't know how to start/finish, so it was great to get one ticked off.

Have a lovely weekend 🩵
