Wonder how this will end. Cant help feeling that "we can open up tomorrow" might not happen as easily as the Democrats are claiming.

Live updates: US government on brink of shutdown after last-ditch Senate vote fails

Federal government funding is expected to cut off at midnight, bringing many services to a temporary halt.

It’s happened before. We got through it. We will get through it again.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/10/2025 05:15

It is astounding that the richest country in the world regularly does shit like this. It’s a clown car of idiots. And no one seems to know how utterly stupid it is.

Tunacheesequesadilla · 01/10/2025 05:25

It's fine. It's happened before.

knitnerd90 · 01/10/2025 05:26

I'm just outside DC. It's a load of shite. GOP blaming Democrats when they have the majority. I think they wanted this, because Trump has threatened to use this as an excuse to fire government workers.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/10/2025 06:03

Happens all. The. Time. So boring.

hollyblueivy · 01/10/2025 06:32

I think it is different this time now. Trump has orchestrated the shutdown and been open about what would happen if it does. Lots of people fired and projects shut down. Why can’t they work together to reach a consensus, vote on it and carry on? Isn’t that what politicians are supposed to do? Trump will act like a dictator with no one to stop him once government shuts down.

It'll quickly open back up when the soldiers, who aren't getting paid, start thinking about not going to work.

It’s not fine. Other countries don’t do this because it’s partisan, childish, manipulative and not in the interests of the people politicians are supposed to serve.

No civilised country would choose this system. It’s an anachronistic nonsense.

I meant fine, as in it'll be resolved soon and my husband will get paid lol, just like last time.

It is bizarre system, I agree. I don't see it changing anytime soon though.

How does it work though if you aren’t getting paid?

what if your rent’s due, or your credit card bill? How does it affect your health insurance, are the premiums still getting paid?

I understand it’s the norm in the us to be paid weekly or bi-weekly, so it’s not like you’ve been paid for the month and can last.

have to say the more I learn about US employment and fire-at-will the more terrifying it is. Especially when your healthcare could be tied to your job. Say the wrong thing to the wrong person and that’s it, unemployed.

I don't know about other government jobs, but we can get interest-free shutdown loans, if we really needed to.

Generally it's a good idea to have anticipated late pay and have a couple of paychecks worth saved. Our healthcare is fine and our housing, water and electricity are free so we're all good there.

Yet more proof that the US Constitution is not fit for purpose.

They really need to scrap the whole damn thing and start again. Ask the French. They've done it enough times.

"Trump will act like a dictator with no one to stop him once government shuts down"

He already is.

Tunacheesequesadilla · 02/10/2025 05:33

For those curious about how it affects the military.

US government shut down.
US government shut down.
