Vodafpne - New SIM card not activating

I thought once a SIM is inserted, the network is activated pretty much straight away. Nearly two hours on, there is no sign that Vodafone is activated on my phone.

SIM manager is showing Unknown number for the new SIM, and I received a SIM not provisioned message once the new SIM was inserted.

I've been on the chat, and they told me to wait and that it could take until midnight to activate.

Prior to this, I requested a number port a couple of weeks ago before the SIM even arrived.

What is the longest time you had to wait before your SIM card worked, as I am sure this is not the norm!

Thanks.

Did you port the number from another network? And if so did you use the PAC you were given?

Snakeface7 · 30/09/2025 20:14

Stating the obvious here but have you turned the phone off and then back on to force it to register on the network ?

Was going to say this. You can also just turn airplane mode on and off again.

Yes, I was with 3, requested the pac code and completed a port request form on Vodafone.

Oh yes. I did the old turn off and turn back on trick, but nada.

Is your number still working on your old 3 SIM? If so, it suggests it just hasn’t gone through yet. When I worked for EE we always used to advise it’s usually/mostly done straighaway/within a couple of hours but it can take anything up to 24 hours to complete.

As far, as I know, it is. The port is for tomorrow, so I don't expect to have a Vodafone number that is my old number right now, but it is the fact that I don't have a number at all which is concerning.

Just to add, I have a dual sim for my phone, so both sim cards are in. I was expecting the Vodafone network to appear activated under a different number in the SIM manager to the one I have with 3.

In the SIM manager, I just get "Unknown Number" under the Vodafone SIm, while the 3 SIM is still showing its current number.

Ah, I see! You mean the temporary number they activate before they transfer your Voda one to it. It could be that it’s just taking a bit longer than normal - it does happen from time to time.

Yes, that's it. I'm not sure what the answer is other than wait. I will go to a shop on Thursday if it's still not sorted tomorrow.

I was just wondering whether in reality it has taken 24 hours in some cases.

Thank you for your input.

I have known it take that long but admittedly it doesn’t usually. The midnight thing does sound legit (our systems used to refresh at that point and is probably the same for most networks), so I wouldn’t worry yet.

Okay, thanks for your responses.

@xsquared there's a problem with 3 transferring numbers at the moment - we've had it with two phones we've just done a switcheroo on. We instigated it not last weekend but the weekend before, it's only just transferred to the new number and now we have to wait for the old number to port over.

It might not be that, but I know that Vodafone and 3 have a network sharing thing so they could have other bits and bobs sharing in the background.

Our numbers have transferred now, so if it is that, hopefully it'll be sorted soon for you!

It transferred and activated during the day yesterday, in the end.

Thanks for your company.
