Seasonal themed home decor and furnishings

Do you change your soft furnishings and accessories according to season?

I think my kids would love it, but I'm far too lazy 😬
We've got a couple pine cones collected from our walks but MIL changes her mantelpiece every season. She's currently got an autumnal leaf swag (? Is that the right word?), a wooden squirrel and some toadstool ornaments, and an autumn plate.
She's very dedicated and it's quite sweet.

I’ve always like seasonal things - mostly natural stuff like conkers or flowers or whatever but I’m not averse to the odd B&M trip and have way too many candles.

It’s seen as very trashy on here though as though people buy stuff and throw it away afterwards - maybe some do but I like the little ritual of getting my bits and pieces out each season, it’s quite comforting in a world which often isn’t!

Oh yes, we will accumulate a stash of conkers and acorns and a pile of interesting leaves in due course!
I know some people go all out and change their cushions and throws with autumn themes, and then onto Halloween everything (even if it's only for a week!).
That's too much effort for me.

I’ve discovered Dunelm sell cushion covers - not loads of variety but it means I can change colours of textures easily without spending a lot or having to store 3/4 sets of cushions!

I like the idea of doing it but I’m rubbish at it, just looks like random mess sitting around rather than an intentional display.

ExitPursuedByABareArse · 30/09/2025 18:49

That sounds like a good compromise @ILoveLukeAlderton
I might have a look for some for MIL 😊

I don’t change my cushions but I do put an autumn garland on the mantle with a few newly crocheted pumpkins and some of those battery candies and a have a similar garland across my back wall (it’s all glass). In the summer I have bunting there. Christmas obviously I change it but not the soft furnishings.

ExitPursuedByABareArse · 30/09/2025 18:56

Garland! That's the word I was looking for! Thanks @mondaytosunday
I like tbe sound of crocheted pumpkins.
We buy a few of those hard gourds, which last ages for the children who like to play with them, but otherwise sit on the windowsills with their leaves and conkers.

I decorate for Halloween, Christmas & Easter but Halloween is external, Easter is some old hanging eggs that I hang on sticks in a vase. Christmas I put foliage above the mirror, things on the mantle, garland on stairs, etc

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 19:05

I haven't ever done autumnal stuff & don't change cushions, curtains etc

afaloren · 30/09/2025 19:07

I have spring, autumn and Christmas/winter decor. I have nothing for summer because I hate it so just sit sullenly looking at my hares while it’s 30 degrees outside 😂 Currently my house is decorated for spooky season and I love it!

rockstarshoes · 30/09/2025 19:13

I have a pumpkin door wreath outside & pumpkin fairy lights inside that go up but it’s mainly about cheering myself up for the long dark evenings!
lots of string lights go up just to try & ward off the miserableness of Winter!

But I don’t change cushions or anything!

Icebreakhell · 30/09/2025 19:14

We need pics.

I’m full of admiration for people who do it tastefully. It can veer off can’t it? I have some ‘tasteful’ ceramic pumpkins out and my candles. Plus an autumnal door wreath that doesn't look tatty (difficult 😂). On the run up to Halloween I’ll add some pumpkins outside I don’t do cushions, bedding, etc though.

NettleandBramble · 30/09/2025 19:24

I don't have the storage space.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 19:24

@Icebreakhell my halloween decor isn't particularly tasteful, lots of lights, skeletons & paper pumpkins, bats etc. I have stuff from Meri Meri (see photo) which is as tasteful as you can get for Halloween I think 😆

I think that looks fab! I love Meri Meri

ShesTheAlbatross · 30/09/2025 19:31

No, not at all. Just for Christmas.

This time of year we’ll get a few sofa throws/blankets out that aren’t really necessary in summer, but they aren’t really seasonal decor. They’ll hang around until March-ish.

clipboardz · 30/09/2025 20:36

@ILoveLukeAlderton yes, it reminds me of when I was a dc.

GreyRooted · 30/09/2025 20:47

I do! The pumpkins we’ve had years since the kids were little! The cushion covers are all piled on that sofa because I’m the only one who use them!🤣

We also have autumn bedding and a wreath on the door.

I do like to change up things like cushion covers, throws, tablecloths for certain times of year (spooky season, christmas, summer).
I don't do tasteful fall decs though. I go black, witchy and full goth!😁
