They’re coming in the house when I thought they were meant to be starting hibernate
anyone was having this ? Or know what’s going on?

They’re not coming in the house but there are loads in the garden and several landed on me when I went for a walk earlier.

MrsJigsaw · 30/09/2025 16:31

Yes, I've just had to close our windows as there were loads coming in!

ComfortFoodCafe · 30/09/2025 16:32

Loads at my allotment and in my garden. No idea why noticed it in the summer too.

onwardandupwards · 30/09/2025 16:34

My back wall and windows are covered in them, not a single one at the front of the house

Virtualhelp · 30/09/2025 16:36

Yes! We’ve had multiple ladybirds appear in the house over the last few days

Beamur · 30/09/2025 16:38

They're looking for places to hibernate and they do this collectively so will also be following scent trails from other ladybirds.

QueenOfCastille · 30/09/2025 22:53

Thousands here. I had to shut all the windows.

Borris · 30/09/2025 23:13

I learned from Sara cox today that’s it’s a ‘loveliness of ladybirds’

CalmShaker · 30/09/2025 23:17

Apparently an abundance of ladybirds is an indication the eco system (feed wise) is working well, when numbers drop scientists get worried

Dreamhigh · 30/09/2025 23:23

There loads of them on our landing in the block they congregated around the firealarm. About 40 of them. It funny the firealarm red like them.

MintTwirl · 30/09/2025 23:45

Yes, we get them like this every Autumn, we have a woodland behind our house so guess that’s why we get so many looking for cosy hibernation spots.

The4teddybears · 30/09/2025 23:51

We’ve been out to a national trust property and gardens today. They were everywhere. Flying in to our faces and hair , and saw literally hundreds of them all over the wall of the building. ,

justasking111 · 30/09/2025 23:53

I'm so jealous. Haven't seen anything like that since 1976

everychildmatters · 01/10/2025 00:31

Yes - my husband was WFH today and he sent me photos of loads of them on our windows! I told him to shut everything up ASAP!!
DD and I really don't like them having both been bitten by them before and by gosh does it hurt!!

They bite?

everychildmatters · 01/10/2025 00:37

@Dreamhigh Yes - and they have incredibly sharp mouth parts. It feels more like a sting and stays painful for quite a little while.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 01/10/2025 00:43

They're looking for somewhere to hibernate.

It's an amazing thing. They get in the gaps round my DPs windows every year so they can't be opened over autumn / winter without unleashing a wave of ladybirds.

I know someone who did building work and uncovered hundreds of thousands of them in a roof, all sorts of colours all mixed in together and piled up on top of each other - I've seen photos, it was amazing.

I've had one chew my fingerprints before, but it didnt hurt! I could see it nibbling but couldn't feel it.

Have you ever seen a ladybird larvae? They look like aliens.

6comma7 · 01/10/2025 02:02

I haven’t seen them. We’ve had some really weird swarms of insects that look like specks of cigarette ash - I’d have loved ladybirds instead. I didn’t know ladybirds had a painful bite!

KillMeMounjaro · 01/10/2025 02:27

I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come: global warming = more ladybirds 😩

I hate ladybirds, they make me feel sick. They stink too, repulsive little fuckers.
Not sure why I opened this thread, tbh.

Netaporter · 01/10/2025 02:43

OMG I thought it was just my house yesterday. Hundreds of the fuckers over my windows and scores of them inside the house before I realised and shut the windows… it was like flying ant day. I had an infestation about 10 years ago so I’m afraid as lovely looking as they are, they have to go.

realsavagelike · 01/10/2025 04:10

Jealous - I love ladybirds! Right now where I live (BC, Canada) it's spiders and their webs EVERYWHERE. Could be worse though - a couple of years ago there was a looper moth infestation 3 years in a row - it was like mothmagheddon with huge crowds of them gathering everywhere (goes in cycles, so we are due a couple pf years off)

justasking111 · 01/10/2025 04:52

Well the only infestation we've had is tiny flies in the kitchen and bathroom they were attracted to my olive oil Marseilles soap. The dish, soap, bathroom wall covered in them .

Coaster1 · 01/10/2025 17:18

I’m kinda glad they’re doing well though. Ecosystem working well

Yes, I've noticed quite a few indoors recently.

And purely by coincidence, I've discovered a spitet mites problem on a big houseplant I have, so I keep relocating any I find I side to being on/near it in the hopes of some natural pest control, as apparently they quite like them 🤣

JaninaDuszejko · 01/10/2025 21:10

It's been a good year for ladybirds with all the aphids. Ladybirds have been in decline for several years so an increase this year is good. Of course, there's also been the spread north of the harlequin ladybirds as well. Harlequins are larger than native species and have orangey brown undersides and legs. They form large groups to hibernate.
