I would say sobbing. The crying has one tear, this is sobbing.

MrsPerfect12 · 30/09/2025 13:27

Crying

PlutarchHeavensbee · 30/09/2025 13:27

Sobbing.

PlutarchHeavensbee · 30/09/2025 13:28

😂 This is the crying with laughter emoji.

bizzey · 30/09/2025 13:31

You see ...I agree ..I use , mainly on the TV threads ! but for a really sad scene/storyline or something.

Bit I have seen it used recently on threads where someone is trying to be funny.

🤣. This one ....
But used the lots of tears /sobbing one to make it seem even funnier ?

I don't know why ...but it really grates on me !!!

First one is sad crying with floods of tears.

Second two with the open mouth and head on one side are crying with laughter.

That's how I read them anyway.

Go to emojipedia.org.

QueenClinomania · 30/09/2025 14:01

It means crying, very upset.

Or dramatic.

I use it to complain to my husband who is currently 4000 miles away that I want chocolate but the shops are shut.

QueenClinomania · 30/09/2025 14:03

😂 crying with laughter
🤣 rolling around crying with laughter
😢 very sad
😭 sobbing your tits off

LivingOnTheVeg · 30/09/2025 14:05

It’s sobbing but can be used interchangeably between happy tears and sad ugly crying.

Sanguinello · 30/09/2025 14:07

I would use it to mean being upset but my young adult dc use it to mean crying with laughter. I assume it's one stage further than 😂

user2848502016 · 30/09/2025 14:07

According to teams it means loudly crying/sob

Twistedfirestarters · 30/09/2025 14:08

I use it to show tongue in cheek over the top upset.. I wouldn't use it to show sincere sadness. If there were a thread about something genuinely sad I'd use 😞 or 😢

If there were a thread about someone's favourite chocolate at being discontinued then I'd probably use 😭

JennieTheZebra · 30/09/2025 14:10

It’s a bit hard to explain… it generally means “Something slightly upsetting has happened which I’m overreacting too, but I know that I’m overreacting so I’m laughing at myself at the same time”. At least that’s how it’s used in my circles. None of those emojis are generally used very seriously tbh.

Keroppi · 30/09/2025 14:11

The Young use it as crying with laughter/funny/omg usually with 💀 like "so funny I'm dead"
😂 is boomerish and outdated, 🤣 is preferred - apparently

Happyapplesanspears · 30/09/2025 14:11

Crying drama queen style is what I use it for so not when actually upset or sad.

justasoul · 30/09/2025 14:13

Teen DD uses when something is really funny - replaced this 💀 as the laughter emoji.

CantSleepEver · 30/09/2025 14:17

My kids use it when they’re being ironic/dramatic.

AI says

The 😭 (Loudly Crying Face) emoji signifies overwhelming emotions, which can include intense sadness, grief, or frustration, but also intense joy, laughter, pride, or even being overwhelmed by cuteness, often in an exaggerated or ironic way. It can also be used to convey a feeling of being unable to handle something, or as a dramatic way to express a strong reaction, similar to an onomatopoeia of wailing.

Common Uses
Overwhelming Sadness or Grief: To express inconsolable sadness or pain.

Intense Joy or Laughter: To convey being overwhelmed by happiness, uncontrollable laughter, or even admiration.

Frustration or Disappointment: To indicate strong frustration or intense disappointment.

Exaggerated Drama: Younger generations, such as Gen Z, use it to express a heightened, dramatic reaction, sometimes to minor events, acting like a "nervous wreck" online.

Irony: It can be used sarcastically or ironically to comment on something not usually deserving of such a strong emotional reaction, like a good meal or getting on a bus on time.

How it's Used
Conveying Intensity:
The heavy tears and open mouth suggest a loss of composure and an inability to handle emotions.

Cultural Context:
The meaning can be generational; while it traditionally means sadness, its usage has broadened to include a wider range of intense, often positive or ironic, emotions.

Yeah

Not crying with laughter.

But crying when it is quite lighthearted and considered funny.

If it was a genuinely sad thing. Would use the one tear 😢
