Why oh why do people turn up to work when they’re poorly?! 😡😡😡

I hate it. My colleague turned up, whinged about how sick she felt for two hours, then threw up in the middle of the carpet and went home. She admitted she’d been feeling poorly all weekend. There’s no excuse for it

Yes, needing the money I guess.

Vomiting on the carpet is truly disgusting. No excuse for anyone doing that who’s not a child or severely disabled in some way.

This! You know when you’re going to be sick, you get ‘wet mouth’. Most normal people would go to the toilet….

Spewing on the carpet ensures people beside her will likely catch it now, nice one! Idiot

MummytoE · 29/09/2025 12:50

Some people like to be martyrs. I hate when sick people come in to my work cause guaranteed 2 days later the whole team start dropping like flies.

sciaticafanatica · 29/09/2025 12:50

Because if I don’t go to work I get nothing for the first 3 days of sickness. I also have to phone in at 630 am, 730 am and again at 330 pm every single day for the first 5 days unless signed of by a doctor.
i then have to have a back to work meeting and get a chart produced showing sickness levels.
unless I’m dying I work!

Eviebeans · 29/09/2025 12:52

I can only think that she has had several absences previously

My "wet mouth" to vomit time has been anything from half an hour to mere seconds.

Who knew people's bodies can react differently!

I’m in the NHS. She’s been here ten years, so gets something like six months fully paid sick leave.

That maybe. It what is the sickness policy? I work in a similar environment and they are all over you if the hit various triggers.

You personally know when you are going to be sick, you are not everyone.

Are you actually suggesting this woman vomited on the carpet deliberately?

FuzzyWolf · 29/09/2025 12:55

People go to work when they are sick because they need the money, there are sick disciplinaries, managers or employers make people feel they have to attend work, some people aren’t assertive enough to call in sick, they have too much work and will come back to even more work….

Not everyone gets that much warning of vomiting.

She knew she felt sick so it can’t have been a surprise.

Of course someone on here would come back saying they don’t know when they’re going to be sick, but the majority of people manage to make it to the toilet I would say.

TwilightAb · 29/09/2025 12:57

I'm with you OP. That is reallly grim and I'd be really annoyed as well.

Ah so you've never felt just nauseous but not thrown up either I see. Everyone must be the same as you then.

You can say whatever you want but that doesn’t mean you’re right 🙄

I often get nothing more than a five second warning, if that. You’re very lucky if you can guarantee to hold it in for long enough to get to a sink or toilet every single time.

Well if you’re one of those people who doesn’t know the feeling of when their body tells them they are going to vomit (there are generally significant signs) don’t go in to an office where you will spread it to everyone and put them in the same situation you find yourself in!

Can you really not understand that it's very possible to feel queasy, then a million dollars, then go downhill in a fairly short space of time?

Of course I’ve felt nauseous and it either goes or gets progressively worse. My children know when they’re going to be sick so they go to the bathroom same as my partner, friends, ex partners,
family members, work colleagues….Bit of a coincidence that all the people I know manage to make it to the bathroom but apparently it’s common not to know….

She could have even put bucket beside her desk then to contain it. She knew she felt unwell

Not sure its common tbh, but I suppose now you know its not mega unusual either

Assuming you’re an actual grown up you can’t be surprised to learn that not every single person is the same as you.

Lots of people have medical conditions that mean they often feel queasy - they can’t just never go to work.

Others have conditions that mean they struggle to interpret their bodies signals (this is common with autism, for example, which is why I struggle). I know I’m feeling sick but I don’t understand that I’m going to be sick until it’s almost too late - or I think I’m going to be sick when I’m actually not.

The OP is righy to be annoyed then because now they’re all likely to get it given that it’s airborne and all the particles are will be breathed in. Lovely….

She can be annoyed all she likes. My sympathy would lie with the person who had thrown up - I certainly wouldn’t be coming onto a public forum to bitch and complain about them in such an identifying way.

rainbowsparkle28 · 29/09/2025 13:11

It is really that much of a dilemma? Because people have bills to pay and a roof to keep over their heads and food on the table, same as everyone. And if your sickness policy / pay doesn’t support you to do that you can’t afford to be sick. Not saying it’s right to go in when you know you are ill but you can see why someone might.

No i suppose youve got a point. This adult woman must have definitely known she was probably going to actually vomit and just decided to wait and do it in work in front of all her colleagues.
