I hate it. My colleague turned up, whinged about how sick she felt for two hours, then threw up in the middle of the carpet and went home. She admitted she’d been feeling poorly all weekend. There’s no excuse for it

Just to say some managers are very unsupportive of employees. You phone in sick for a reason. But managers phone you saying they don't have cover for your post. So you feel obligated to come into work it's happened to me!

The fact that you lack human compassion for your colleague, so much so that you come on here to publicly post a moan says so much about you. Poor woman was unwell. Get a life.

The Bradford factor, basically. Used by shit employers everywhere.

In my husbands case he cannot take more than a certain amount of days before getting warnings- he has a pre existing medical condition that results in sickness days, so has been constantly having to attend back to work interviews with warnings every time he is off. If he was to stay off work for mild illnesses that may improve through the day or doesn't stop him doing his job as well he would be so over their limit that he would be fired. If you hate it that much then change your job to something wfh based- you don't know what pressures others are going through that result in them having to feel they need to work through illness. Pretty sure nobody wants to!

We get sick pay however I have came in ill today because otherwise I would have just been slagged off for taking a day sick because the company pays sick pay and it’s taking the piss.

You can’t win.

But aren't you then encouraging the culture of people coming in when ill? If "everyone" comes in when ill, then people will keep coming ill when ill. We need courage to stand up for what is right, not just fear of getting slagged off.

The consensus seems to be that many don’t get sick pay. Those that do are penalised by “better not be sick more than twice a year or we will heap bad conduct and dismissal on your head! It will go on your record as a problem employee. Every employer does this. When my father died suddenly there was a lot to sort out and funeral arrangements to be made. Company was sympathetic telling me I could have as much time as I needed. So I took a week off. On return I was told that this was holiday that I had taken. I was appalled as it definitely was not a holiday. So rather that lose my holiday I told them I would take it as unpaid leave. Companies tout empathy but it’s all down to money every time. A load of tosh! 🥺

As a contractor you’re going to go in
no sick time

No. It’s called a lack of common sense and respect for others. If unwell work from home or have the time off. Sick people coming to work just makes others ill and isn’t fair. I’ve had a similar incident recently and complained to HR, said I’ll person was an Employed member of staff with paid sick allowance per year, and flexible working. I’m a contractor and the company offer me neither so I rightfully complained. I can’t afford to be ill and have unpaid time off. Sadly the selfish ones like at my workplace think it’s worth the recognition and a big pat on the back for soldering on when ill, when it’s so backwards it’s ridiculous. Gotta love toxic workplaces still giving this message

You have to take into consideration the practices of companies employing people- you work for yourself so you have no one to ask, and no interviews and forms to fill out, and you have no work backing up while you are away.
You can't expect to never come in contact with infectious diseases just because you are a contractor- we all take this risk every day of our lives-you included.
No one else can afford to be sick either, statutory sick pay even if you get it is tiny.
No one I know of in the UK has a paid sick allowance per year- what even is that?
You take the same risk as everyone else-get over it.

If only we could stay at home with colds and flu and sore throats and injuries! But company rules won’t let us! Low paid workers lose what little money they earn. Whether you get sick pay or not! Being sick is a crime and companies make sure we are convicted and sentenced. It has always been thus. I agree that spreading infections to co workers is not nice so why not use Covid tactics. Wear masks. Use hand sanitizer keep your distance and use fresh air where possible. Japanese have been wearing face masks for decades to protect themselves it is a common courtesy. Why do we not?
common sense does not always prevail.
infant and Junior schools are Petrie dishes and infect teachers all the time. There has been research going on for over 70 years on a vaccine for the common cold. Are we there yet! No. There is no answer because employers will not allow sickness to leach into their profits. Business is all about profit and we are worker ants working away for the nest. Dinosaurs got colds and viruses have been on our planet since before humans! Don’t think we are going to solve the illness debate. It’s here to stay and regarding working from home, where exactly would you use a JCB digging muddy foundations! In your lounge?
