Why oh why do people turn up to work when they’re poorly?! 😡😡😡

I hate it. My colleague turned up, whinged about how sick she felt for two hours, then threw up in the middle of the carpet and went home. She admitted she’d been feeling poorly all weekend. There’s no excuse for it

OP posts:

Could she be pregnant ?

Megifer · 29/09/2025 13:56

SafeSex · 29/09/2025 13:48

Well ok, but it clearly wasn't the case with the OP's colleague as she had reportedly been feeling nauseous for the whole of the preceding weekend!

Never felt sickly, then ok, then ill again?

Lucky you. Its shit thinking you've got over it then it kicks off again. Bit like thinking you've got away with a hangover when you wake up then by 11am you're like a spirit just haunting the house 😔

StarCourt · 29/09/2025 13:57

what’s wet mouth?

flibberflob · 29/09/2025 13:58

I hate having to phone in sick (which is very rarely luckily) there is always this undertone of disbelief. I see it with the way others are talked about, the default seems to be that people are faking it.

SafeSex · 29/09/2025 12:07

I have never gone from feeling sick to being sick in an instant. Does this really happen to people?

Edited

Yes. Not my finest moment, but it’s happened.

ive also felt queasy but gone into work thinking it will pass, only to be sent home because it got worse.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 29/09/2025 14:00

Well, all i know is that one of my bosses went apeshit at a colleague who rang in to say she had chicken pox. My colleague said she should not come in, not least because another colleague was pregnant at the time.

There was screaming down the phone.

The colleague came in. Apparently the solution was that the pregnant colleague should work from home for a bit. Never mind the rest of us including another colleague who was having chemo.

In short- some workplaces and some bosses are fucking arseholes and some employees don't feel they have the ability to say no. No matter what the law might say.

I am thank you.

Bet you're popular😂

ClawedButler · 29/09/2025 14:03

It's a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't thing, isn't it.

Some people will bitch about a colleague coming in when they're unwell. Some people will bitch about a colleague NOT coming in when they're unwell. Some bosses will want to stop any illness potentially spreading through the team, some bosses are only interested in bums on seats.

FuzzyWolf · 29/09/2025 14:04

It’s bizarre the number of people on here who seem to think that she choose to vomit all over the carpet. Really? That’s not normal behaviour for an adult. Most people would want to be sick in private.

Megifer · 29/09/2025 14:04

StarCourt · 29/09/2025 13:57

what’s wet mouth?

When you get loads of saliva in your mouth just before you throw up.

I get that every time, therefore, everyone else must experience the same thing as me.

Edited- though I have had wet mouth and not thrown up. Always grateful for those times.

I’m 52 years of age and have never (as an adult anyway) vomited where I stood. I’ve always been able to get to a toilet or a container. It’s vile behaviour. Someone has to clean that up!

JLou08 · 29/09/2025 14:07

Because people moan about people being off sick and many assume people are lying when they say they are too sick for work.
I hate people coming in ill too but I understand why they feel the need to.

Wexone · 29/09/2025 14:07

Mumof2wifeof1crazytimes · 29/09/2025 13:37

People shouldn’t be calling in sick just because they feel sick. I would not accept that as a reason for someone not to come in to work.

it happens, people get ill at work and need to go home. Poor woman probably feels bad enough without the judgemental comments.

See this is the mindset your dealing with and the Op questioning why people come into work when they feel sick

That’s because the overwhelming need at a time of realising you are going to vomit is to get somewhere appropriate to do so. For some people, they can’t get there in time because I don’t believe any adult would go into work and deliberately publicly vomit if they could help it.

DramaLlamacchiato · 29/09/2025 14:09

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/09/2025 11:45

You’ve obviously never been taken suddenly unwell. Can’t always be helped.

Well yes, I have. I’ve always managed to get somewhere appropriate to be sick though. I’d expect anyone above the age of a small child to do so. Someone else presumably had to clean that up. Disgusting

MummytoE · 29/09/2025 14:11

I think some people and some bosses don't realise you can be contagious without actually throwing up...

DramaLlamacchiato · 29/09/2025 14:13

Wow I’m glad I don’t work with some of you who seem to think an adult spewing where she stands, making no effort to get to a loo/sink/receptacle, leaving it to someone else to clean up, is acceptable behaviour. I’ve been sick as well in life you know, I’m not exempt. Puking on a carpet at work is repulsive.

Dontletthebedbugsbite2 · 29/09/2025 14:13

LOL, I knew it would be NHS. Never experienced a more toxic workplace. The poor woman thought she would be okay to work, ended up vomiting, is probably mortified on top of feeling ill & you're on here complaining. Most normal people would be feeling sorry for their ill colleague and wishing them well. Nobody goes into work feeling unwell for the fun of it - surely you can understand this? Maybe she's hit a trigger point for absence, maybe she's got a terrible home life & doesn’t want to be there, maybe she felt she was letting her team down by being off or maybe she genuinely thought she was well enough, regardless, the woman is ill & as I said before probably mortified.

I think some of us are just mature enough to understand that just because something hasnt happened to us or someone we know, doesn't mean it never happens 🤷‍♀️

IneedtheeohIneedtheeeveryhourIneedthee · 29/09/2025 14:16

Would she have been paid for that day's work if she had not come in?

Sick pay sometimes only kicks in if you have a doctor's note which she would likely not have for just one day off.

The fact that she has actually come in means she will be paid for sure, even if she has gone home early.

Whatshesaid96 · 29/09/2025 14:17

Some managers can be absolute arses about people calling in sick. I worked for a company for three years, never a day off sick or even late. I happened to take a Monday off as i'd been ill with D&V over the weekend. When I was back the following day I had senior management taking the piss saying I'd taken the day off to sunbathe and get over my hangover. Yeh I stopped offering to do overtime and staying behind after that.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 29/09/2025 14:17

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/09/2025 11:37

Because of work sickness policies.

Exactly this….

Yeah, probably. I just meant that I've never gone from feeling nauseous to actually vomiting without enough warning to get to the bathroom.

Bloozie · 29/09/2025 14:21

NHS culture - you come in unless you're dead, because you're looking after people sicker than you.

It's never happened where I work but I am still able to be sympathetic that sometimes things can't be helped.

I had such bad food poisoning once, I could barely move. Luckily I was at home, but I needed a bowl and a towel by the bed for about 24 hours. It came out of nowhere, if I had been at work, it might not have made it to the bathroom.
