Why oh why do people turn up to work when they’re poorly?! 😡😡😡

I hate it. My colleague turned up, whinged about how sick she felt for two hours, then threw up in the middle of the carpet and went home. She admitted she’d been feeling poorly all weekend. There’s no excuse for it

Oh come on. Some of these responses are wild.

It’s the NHS. Sick pay is not the issue.

If you don’t feel well, don’t go in. It is grim going in not feeling well and grim for the colleagues you have vomited in front of. It matters not a jot if it’s not contagious.
Take the time
Feel better
Don’t expose your colleagues to your bugs.

Sick pay may not be an issue, but let's not pretend that there aren't some very toxic workplaces where you're hauled in for a meeting every time you're sick - especially on a Monday.

Yep, a 'Return to Work' meeting for having one day off.

CottageGoblin · 29/09/2025 18:19

@XenoBitch @warmapplepies

yeah, I can concede that.

And workplace toxicity has gotten worse generally, I agree

Calmingsnake · 29/09/2025 17:28

Go to a toilet. You usually have plenty of warning

As has already been established, on this thread and by virtue of the fact that not everyone is the same, sometimes you really dont get much warning at all.

Which probably answers why she came into work feeling rubbish.

I remember being hauled up for a meeting with two managers because I called in sick for work once, many years ago. It was horrendous.

SilverCamellia · 29/09/2025 18:29

I’m with you OP. Gross! Stay home if you feel that ill.

Sick pay isnt an issue in the NHS.

But a regular occurance in the NHS was (is?) to wax lyrical about wellbeing etc to the person on a phone call...all while literally being in the middle of typing out their invite to a formal absence monitoring meeting.

freakingscared · 29/09/2025 18:55

Because people cannot afford to be ill and because most jobs look down on people who take sick days

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 29/09/2025 19:53

For appearances or scared they miss something.
Worked with one guy he came in so Ill he fell asleep at lunchtime oh but to have the bragging rights.. never a day off ill.
Cheers cunt I had a serious chest infection that the hospital wanted to admit me.. caught of of said fucker.

It’s not that deep to be going around calling people idiots🤣

If another term of insult is more to your taste, please feel free to specify.

FitAt50 · 29/09/2025 22:27

Why oh why do people use the word poorly when they mean sick. #HateIt

frostybritches · 29/09/2025 22:31

Do people genuinely think that someone would go into work deliberately to puke on the carpet in front of others? I mean does anyone actually think “I feel terrible but I think it’ll be great fun to drag myself into work and vomit in front of my colleagues.”

Most people would want to stay home in their own surroundings and vomit in their own toilet. So if she’s forced herself to go in it’s because of pay, policies or toxic culture. I’d guess the latter.

OMG I know. Poorly's a baby word imo.

It especially jars on me when news reports describe people as 'poorly' or 'very poorly' (although I think I remember hearing that in that context it's sort of code for what a person's chances are, not sure if I've remembered that correctly though.)

You’re embarrasing yourself now🤣 I made one comment and you’re now resorting to insults. As I said, it’s really not that deep but if insulting strangers over the internet makes you feel better then go ahead. Won’t bother me. Use your imagination🤷🏻‍♀️

BatchCookBabe · 30/09/2025 10:08

Gosh, using the word 'poorly' for 'unwell' is babyish now is it? Confused

I must tell my 80-something, and 90-something aunts and uncles, and my 70-something, and 80-something, and 90-something friends that they are BABIES because they use the word 'poorly' to describe feeling unwell.

Honestly, this place never fails to amaze me sometimes, when someone using a different word than they do for something, is BABYISH. 🙄

Do people really talk like this in real life? What am I saying, of course they don't! 😆

Do you always take the internet so seriously?

Sick is disgustingly American

I once did this OP. I am not proud of it. But it was a brand new job. Day 2. I woke up at about 5am feeling sick and thinking "oh my god I can't not go in when I've only just started".

I went in (needed to change trains on the way and was sick on the platform) and then was sick in the office (fortunately not over a carpet but it was in a kitchen sink). Funnily enough they sent me home.

It was a really stupid thing to do.

You made an idiotic comment and then doubled down on it and threw in a handful of 'oh-so-edgy' crying-with-laughter emojis. I really don't think I'm the one embarrassing myself on this thread.

I don’t think what I said was idiotic. Throwing up on the floor in front of others is rude and disgusting. If she couldn’t make it to the toilet in time then fair enough. But vomit is disgusting. There’s no doubt about it.

A laughing emoji isn’t trying to be “edgy” You seems quite unstable to be honest. The person who was sick doesn’t know you exist love. You’re not going to score brownie points for defending her. Get a life

Calmingsnake · 30/09/2025 11:54

@dreamiesformolly Your “idiotic” comment got deleted so yeah, I think you’re the embarrasing one because you had to use insults to get your point across. Have a nice day and try and calm down

No one's suggesting that a person who uses a baby word is a baby for using it. It's a comment on the word, not people who employ it. Lighten up.

MummytoE · 30/09/2025 12:26

I always think of " poorly" as an English middle class word. Of which I am neither 😂

Another poster incapable of any form of critical thinking. Rudeness implies it was deliberate. Do you know many people who enjoy spontaneously vomiting on the carpet in front of their colleagues for fun?

It is disgusting, you’re right about that. Maybe try a little compassion for the embarrassment of the person it happened to rather than focusing on your own feelings of discomfort.
