Hmmm... My in laws live there so I 've been many times, it very much depends where you are as to how safe it is. Some areas that used to feel safe to me no longer do unfortunately. Its perfectly possible to have a good holiday there with very careful planning and research.

Cape town? Joburg? Or somewhere else?

Cape Town is fine, wouldn't go back to Jo'burg if you begged me (I have been several times). My in laws are just outside Durban, thats gone right down hill sadly.

Hands down for me Morocco.

Loved hiking the Atlas Mountains and eating on tables set in the fall water.

Loved the food.

Loved the souks.

Also loved a car tour we did, whereby we got to visit a family in their home and drink authentic mint tea (I didn’t love that 😬)

You can enjoy South Africa and not be scared?

It’s more than 10 years since we were there, but we never felt in danger. South Africa isn’t Switzerland, obviously, so you need to be sensible about where you go. There are no-go areas in all the cities, particularly after dark. Central Joburg is one big no-go area. The standard of driving is atrocious. The wildlife can obviously be very dangerous, but if you really need to be told to be wary of a 5 ton bull elephant, a 5 metre crocodile or a herd of bad tempered buffalo, you should probably stick to Torremolinos.

West coast of Sardinia in early summer. Should have been high 20s but there was a bur if a heatwave and it got to over 40 a couple of days but it was wonderful.

Also (and I appreciate that this isn't exactly the holiday of a lifetime destination) Cardiganshire this summer. The weather was wonderful, we had days on the gesch, swam in the sea, a whole week of loveliness. I think sometimes the best holiday is just a bit of luck when everything falls right.

  1. Safari to Zimbabwe (Great Zimbabwe, Hwange and Victoria Falls) and Botswana (Chobe and the Okavango)
  2. Safari to Zambia (South Luangwa) and Tanzania (The Great Rift, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti and Olduvai Gorge)
  3. Switzerland - the Bernese Oberland (Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen)
  4. China - Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guilin and Shanghai
  5. Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi

Me and ds doing the Californian road trip, LA to SF. He was 15, Dh had died the previous year, it was something just for us. We had an absolutely brilliant time. I’m not going to the US for the foreseeable future but at least I have had that trip.

A long weekend at Ambleside Youth Hostel with Dh and ds. One of the very few holidays we had that didnt involve either tents or in-laws. I didn’t mind camping, we had some great trips, but omg it was fabulous having a roof, showers and beds, plus the YH is an amazing location. And just doing what we liked without my (lovely) in-laws was [chefs kiss]

Your post made my eyes leak.

My best holiday was also a California Road trip (other way round to you and included San Diego at the end). First time ever in the US, 16 and 18 year old DS's loved it too. DH did all the driving. I absolutely take my hat off to you for doing it just you and your DS. I know you and he will treasure the memories of that holiday forever. California is such a huge and varied state, I didn't really realise till I started planning it

Nothing will beat that trip. It was supposed to be a one-off but we did go back a couple of years later to do a slightly different route, to include Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes. I've gone all my life not really seeing the appeal of the US because the only people I know who'd been had been because of Disney in Florida, or maybe a short break to New York. I guess I had just thought that's all that the US had to offer in terms of holidays, and then I read a similar thread to this one on MN a few years ago, which listed the amazing things people had done on their California road trip, joined the FB group and that was it.

I'm hooked now. Oh, their National Parks.....glorious....

Probably the one we just had in Colombia. That was just me and DH.
With kids, either Slovenia or Singapore/Borneo.
