A boating holiday on the Canal du Midi in France

BadActingParsley · 29/09/2025 10:53

A canal holiday in Spring through the Midlands - it was so beautiful, peaceful and lovely pubs.

Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Whistler (wasn't keen on Whistler but loved the drive there). Easy driving, great food, lots of wildlife and nature, Vancouver is an easy city to like.

Really enjoyed a cycling holiday in Croatia - it was with a group but you went at your own pace and met up in the evening if you wanted to. The food was fantastic, the scenery was really lovely and some great architecture and nice local hotels.

A self guided cycle through the Loire Valley, amazing food, cute local hotels, the cycle paths were all dedicated paths with great signposting, loads of sightseeing - would happily go again.

Norway - fjords, glaciers, cosy cabins, car hire, absolutely amazing 😍

Thailand - v smart hotel, beach and boat trips, amazing food and general luxury.

My actual favourite holidays have been standard package trips to Greek islands - pool, beach, occasional town trip, tavernas and family fun. As long as the room has air con and the airport transfer is not too arduous then these have been the best times 😊

Some ideas:

The Maldives, Shanghai, Seville, Iceland, the Galápagos Islands, Edinburgh, The Gower Peninsula, Pembrokeshire, New Zealand, Boston

Amalfi coast for my 40th to a fancy hotel with an infinity pool.
any of our skiing holidays as it’s just such a great family holiday. The last one to Tignes was probably my favourite though as my teenage kids just seemed to enjoy the family time spent together on the slopes so much.

Staying in a beautiful beach cottage in Cape Cod. One night, DH and I sat outside on the deck, drinking coffee and watching the 4th of July fireworks explode overhead and it was just so magical.

We ate amazing seafood every day, walked along pristine beaches and caught a boat out to see dozens of Fin Whales.

We finished off by spending 5 days in beautiful Boston staying at the 5* The Newbury which is now my all time favourite hotel.

That sounds like my perfect holiday!

Barbados x 8 times. The 9th is booked for next March.
Italy

I’ve been to many other places. Barbados and Italy are the top two for me. Having said that, I’ve just got back from Greece and am going to Madeira next month.

MissAmbrosia · 29/09/2025 11:35

Pre-DD: 7 of us on a canal boat cruise though Camargue and Canal du Midi. it was absolutely hilarious and also magical having breakfast in the middle of nowhere surrounded by flamingos and wild horses.

With Dd - 3 week road trip to Tuscany via Bavaria, Valpolicella, Lake Como and Switzerland. And the Dordogne - we went several times as there is so much to do for kids (and adults). And interrailing when she was older.

With DH, after Dd went to Uni - umm hard to pick. Lots of lovely places in Italy mainly with stunning views, great food and lots of aperol spritzes. Ischia, Puglia, Liguria, Calabria, Lakes.....

With my girlfriends - lots of city breaks, but Seville and Lisbon are probably top of the list.

That sounds like my perfect holiday!

It was absolutely perfect. We ate hotdogs whilst watching the Red Sox play at Fenway (incredible atmosphere) and wandered along the cobble streets of Elm Hill whilst drinking coffee. Just so, so good.

Hoolihan · 29/09/2025 12:19

Have travelled all over the world but my second choice is Madeira. Funchal really has it all

Tryingatleast · 29/09/2025 17:42

No one stands out but there was one camping one that was something out of a book- bingo outside, group games- all the families chatting and getting along, was just fab!

SouthwarkLass · 29/09/2025 17:53
