Second favourite was a city break to Budapest.

Close third favourites: Slovenia, Austrian alps, Iceland.

@PistachioTiramisu any tips or recommendations for Antigua? We’re going Easter next year

It is just beautiful! We stayed at Jolly Beach a couple of times which was gorgeous, but I know there are many lovely hotels all around the coast. My best tip would be to take a catamaran day trip to Barbuda - the sand was really pink and so perfectly Caribbean. Also, Nelson's Dockyard is fascinating - try climbing up to the battlements where there is an old cannon gun thing overlooking the sea. You will love it!

Svalbard in January during the 24 hour night. We went dogsledding, northern lights-spotting, we went down a disused mine a mile under the permafrost with just a guide and no other tourists. She (the guide) asked us if we’d like to turn off the torches and sit in absolute silence and darkness and we did, it was magical. We crawled down a hole and dug out a bit of our own coal. I rolled onto my back and my nose was only a foot from the roof of the tunnel with pit props to each side of me holding up the mountain! We ate hearty food in Longyearbyen and came off the road in another blizzard on the way down another mountain. We ate chocolate with Vigo the taxi driver while we were waiting for someone to come up from the town and tow is back onto the road. There was a lovely library/coffee shop on the main street and we had huge cinnamon buns there in the afternoons. There was only one supermarket and you had to leave your gun outside. Happy days!

@PistachioTiramisu thank you, did you do any tours? Keen to do an island tour and a circumnavigation boat tour

Titasaducksarse · 29/09/2025 19:39

Cuba

As part of a European trip we stayed at couple of nights in Switzerland. The scenery was so stunning, I cried.

Tenby in Pembrokeshire is one of my all time favourite places. I feel happiest when I'm there.

No - we were staying in a friend's villa so didn't do tours. We did take the bus from Jolly Beach into St John's a few times which was an experience!! We were lucky enough to have use of our friend's boat (any my husband sails) so we went round the coast that way. The circumnavigation boat tour sounds really nice though!

As a child, with my parents and brother:
Yorkshire
Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

As a teen with school:
Rome.

With ex partners:
The Mani in Greece, staying in Aghios Nkloloas near Stoupa which is at the very top of the Main, before it curves in.
Travelling in Georgia (Eastern Europe, not America).

With DD as a single mom:
Amsterdam
Camping in the Lakes
Aberystwyth (have also had great breaks with friends there).

A special award has to go to the Lake District as I have enjoyed that with family, with partners, with daughter - and I hope to get a couple of nights there on my own next summer when DD is with her dad, and expect to enjoy that immensely too!

Me and ds doing the Californian road trip, LA to SF. He was 15, Dh had died the previous year, it was something just for us. We had an absolutely brilliant time. I’m not going to the US for the foreseeable future but at least I have had that trip.

A long weekend at Ambleside Youth Hostel with Dh and ds. One of the very few holidays we had that didnt involve either tents or in-laws. I didn’t mind camping, we had some great trips, but omg it was fabulous having a roof, showers and beds, plus the YH is an amazing location. And just doing what we liked without my (lovely) in-laws was [chefs kiss]

SingingSands · 29/09/2025 19:51

Hiking round the Cami de Cavalls in Menorca. Think about it nearly every day!

A road/train trip from New Orleans to Chicago up the Mississippi taking in all the delta blues sites, Nashville (for a total eclipse) and Memphis. I absolutely loved it and would love to go back, but age and the political situation makes it unlikely Sad

We did a very similar trip and loved it. The highlights for me were Memphis and Clarksdale.

Other than that, I'd say Japan. It's mixture of big scenery and small but incredible differences that are fascinating: squirrels as roadwork barriers, children folding paper cranes at Hiroshima, so many local and seasonal specialities and playing snowballs with a little lad in Aomori.

Hmmm... My in laws live there so I 've been many times, it very much depends where you are as to how safe it is. Some areas that used to feel safe to me no longer do unfortunately. Its perfectly possible to have a good holiday there with very careful planning and research.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 29/09/2025 20:26

@PistachioTiramisuSt James Club. Thank you

SpottyAardvark · 29/09/2025 20:29

South Africa, no contest. And I have been everywhere.

We flew into Cape Town, spent a couple of days in the city, then a few days touring the wine growing region, then went down to the coast for whale watching at Hermanus. Then we flew over to Joburg, picked up a hire car & drove over the high veld to the Kruger National park where we did the safari thing. We were privileged enough to sea a leopard kill an Impala. Genuinely unforgettable once in a lifetime stuff.

Cocktailsandcheese · 29/09/2025 20:32

Road trip from San Diego up the West coast to San Francisco, then to Napa Valley, Yosemite and through Death Valley over to Vegas. The drive up Highway 1 was amazing, as was the drive through Death Valley. Would absolutely do it again.
