At dentist today and I’ve never had the best gag reflex but didn’t vomit but eyes watering and the rest and it got me questioning, do people ever vomit at the dentist or is it just everyone has a normal gag reflex?

When I last visited the dentist I was having moulds done for Invisalign, when the dentist held the mould on for a few minutes I gagged so bad and eyes watered like crazy!! I’m usually ok with check ups but I do have to swallow a lot

Yes! I threw up after an extraction because the gauze they used afterwards made me gag and they quite rightly insisted I had to keep it in to form a blood clot. But I couldn’t stop gagging on it and threw up in the bin. I had an xray and that made me gag too. The technician told me it’s very very normal!
Edited to add that yes, I got a dry socket because of it..

My dentist taught me a trick that worked for my gag reflex. Keeping your legs as straight as possible, press down with your knees and try to lift your legs up. I hope I’ve described this clearly.

I got a vomit bowl wedged under my chin with 2 of my wisdom teeth extractions, but both were done in maxfax/surgical unit and a bit grim. Black eye after etc. I passed out halfway through the second one and got given hypostop which made me feel worse!

Dd has in the past, during an attempt to fissure seal her back molars.

Out of curiosity, I just asked a mate of mine who's a dentist. About one a month on average was his answer.

I got in trouble once at the dentist when I gagged: she said I should have told her I had a strong gag reflex. I said, how on earth would I know?!

I am better now at breathing and letting the feeling pass but the reflex is still there.

My dentist uses a 3d printer called something like Ivira. Much less uncomfortable.

sueelleker · 24/09/2025 18:50

I don't vomit, but do have a very sensitive gag reflex. Every time they get near the back teeth, off I go!

Louisetopaz21 · 24/09/2025 18:52

My dentist is aware of my poor gag reflex and warns the nurses when they see using the suction thing. I gag and I am really jumpy and flinch a lot 😅

Itero, that was it. It became clear very quickly that the mould wasn’t going to happen so he got this out instead & it was so much easier!

Oh this could really help me. I have a terrible gag reflex and get twilight sedation (fantastic!), BUT... they cannot use that for moulds and I need a replacement crown. Uh Oh....

I wonder if you could give a brief description of how the Itero scan works? Do they put anything in your mouth?

Sorry for sounding like a baby but the fear is real and I just can't do the moulds. Thank you if you have time to explain.

Yup, DS was getting moulds done for his braces and gagged and threw up all down himself. It was a 9am appointment so we had to go home and get him totally stripped and changed before he could go to school. Poor kid.

I’ve found a video on YouTube. It’s aimed at dentists but it also gives you an idea of what’s involved. You have to keep your mouth wide open & then bite down at the end briefly, but it’s nowhere near as big or uncomfortable as a mould.

@EmpressaurusKitty Thank you, that's very much appreciated. Now to go and have a look 😮

A friend of mine threw up in her mother’s lap as a teen after having the mould done for her braces.

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 24/09/2025 20:05

I have. Dentist reassured me it happens fairly frequently and not to worry.

WWomble · 24/09/2025 20:07

I have a very sensitive gag reflex, I warn the dental nurses before they do x-rays.
