DH thinks it's weird for men to watch soaps

I have a DH who watches all the soaps (Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale). He has said he would be embarrassed if anyone found out as the majority of soap viewers are women. No one else knows that he watches them except me. I would say he is probably right that most soap viewers are women. Not sure if I would agree it's 'weird' for a man to watch them though. What are your thoughts on this MN?

I don’t watch them and neither does my man. Doesn’t matter to me what others do

It would give me the ick but I'm not sure why and I wouldn't admit to it in real life.

This is exactly me too!

Me three. I think of soaps and to m of elderly women .. dh sitting down to eastenders would be a turn off for me too even though I know I am being totally unreasonable !

I don't tend to think of a certain gender although I do think society had this reductive idea it's womens TV because " women care more about relationships" and "men care about sports blah blah blah. So I don't personally find it weird but I can appreciate he feels its less common in men or men don't talk about it? I have none lots of men watch it though. Certainly growing up lots of boys watched hollyoaks.

Personally It's not something I'd be attracted to in a partner of either gender because I see it as a waste of time/life if they are that into it that they can't miss an episode will decline invitations to go out or go on holidays like my Mil does🙈

My oh and I don't really watch TV but I'm not against the odd dipping into no brain TV but weekly numerous shows I'd find would take over life. Horses for courses and all that.

I think it's weird for anyone to watch soaps. Particularly MIL who can't go out/function/live if she hasn't caught up on all of them (last one might be an over exaggeration) her rants during a World Cup/euros/Wimbledon are epic 😂

sanityisamyth · 24/09/2025 19:51

Soaps are utter crap but I suppose someone must watch them to keep making them?!

Comedycook · 24/09/2025 19:55

Ive never known a man who watches soaps...my dad never watched tv, none of the men in my family watched soaps...or any boyfriends I've had. The women in my family and my female friends all used to religiously watch the soaps in the 80/90s...but hardly any do anymore. Decades ago they were definitely a topic of conversation.

Itiswhysofew · 24/09/2025 19:59

I've never known any men that watch soaps. I don't either. I don't watch TV.

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 24/09/2025 20:08

Not my thing but I wouldn't think any man watching is any less of man for doing so.
My Dw is avid Emmerdale and Corrie viewer.
I used to watch years ago,Annie Walker, bet Lynch, Rita, ena sharples,Stan and Hilda, Ernest Elsie Tanner,Len Fairclough (less said about him the better)Ray and Deirdre Langton.
Jeepers..I know too much 😀

Sliceofbattenberg · 24/09/2025 20:11

Before streaming at least the people I know used to watch the soaps together, so if one half of a couple did, the other generally did too. I imagine there are more female viewers also because women live longer.

LadydeBathe · 24/09/2025 20:13

I honestly don’t know anyone, male or female, that watches soaps. But yes, a bloke watching soaps is really weird imo.

ExquisitelyDecorating · 24/09/2025 20:23

I grew up watching Corrie, EE, Brookie and Emmerdale but they were all only on twice a week, there wasn't much else on TV in the early evenings as there were only 4 channels, no VCRs and my friends and I only tended to go out at weekends. But they all shifted to 5 nights a week which was too much, and with the advent of videos to rent and to record on there were suddenly better ways to spend evenings. I don't recall any men I have known at any time watching them but I guess some probably do.

cariadlet · 24/09/2025 20:25

I used to watch Coronation Street with my DH. We haven't watched it for a few years but he was into it st least as much as I was.
