Rome - go or cancel?

I've booked a weekend in February next year but for some reason I just can't get excited about it. It just doesn't fill me with excitement as it did before I started looking on street view. It looks... quite run down and just not what I expected. But then sometimes the best trips are the ones that surprise you.

Go or cancel? I'll not lose much £ if I cancel soon...

Cancel, no point if you don't want to go.

IceLollyMolly · 23/09/2025 12:02

Go! It's wonderful.

JuvenileBigfoot · 23/09/2025 12:03

I love Rome. It's my favourite European city. I don't find it run down at all! In fact they have just finished renovating a lot of it eg the Trevi Fountain. It's beautiful and the food is amazing.
Honestly, go!

Bladderpool · 23/09/2025 12:03

I’ve been just about everywhere and I’d go back to Rome in a heartbeat. Bear in mind it might be quite cold in February. I highly recommend a Vespa tour.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/09/2025 12:04

I don't understand why you would not go.

HermioneWeasley · 23/09/2025 12:04

Rome is stunning and in February you’ll avoid the crowds and get good deals on hotels.

IReallyLikeYorkshire · 23/09/2025 12:08

The graffiti absolutely everywhere has really put me off!

ApricotCheesecake · 23/09/2025 12:10

It's up to you of course OP, but it's a really beautiful city.

Graffiti has put you off....Jesus.

OakDeane24 · 23/09/2025 12:11

I went in March this year. I can guarantee you there is not grafitti everywhere. Where are you staying (what area)

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 23/09/2025 12:11

😫, honestly? I tell you what don’t bother. Save the wonderful history, architecture and culture to people who will enjoy it.

That's some parts of Italy for you, it doesn't signal run down in the same way as here.

When we were driving into Bologna for our honeymoon I thought 'Why have we come to this graffiti-strewn shithole for our honeymoon?' As soon as we started exploring I realised I was totally wrong and had a brilliant time.

The Italians have a very particular and different relationship with graffiti. Its not really understood as indicative that an area's rundown so its not really seen as a priority to be cleared up. So I wouldn't read too much into graffiti everywhere.

I've been all over Italy and worked there for a while.

Rome is lovely. Go.

It's no where near as dirty, rough, rundown and generally shit as London.

Radiatorvalves · 23/09/2025 12:13

We were there in March. Loved it. Food is amazing. Colosseum fantastic. Not enough time for Vatican. We walked miles and saw loads. Don’t remember any graffiti!

Go!

I’ve been to Rome many times and can’t even remember seeing graffiti.

NoEyeDeerEye · 23/09/2025 12:17

100% this. if you aren't looking forwrd to it you can only be pleasantly suprised.
Have look at the Colleseum (sp?) online or the roof of the Sistine Chapel (might make you scream in delight!). There is much beauty.

Bladderpool · 23/09/2025 12:19

Why did you book it in the first place with that weird attitude?

Absentosaur · 23/09/2025 12:19

Obviously it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Check your accommodation, is it in a good location, is it good accommodation? Some locations are better than others, more walkable. Book slots the earliest you can to see the sites. And where you don’t need tickets, go as early as you can manage. This way you avoid the crowds. Though Feb will naturally be less hectic than July. Nicer though. Crisp cold morning wrapped up warm, strolling through Rome appreciating its beauty and history. Stopping for a coffee / pastry in a cafe. Etc. not much better, imo. Though if you prefer to stay at home, nothing stopping you!

Hobnobswantshernameback · 23/09/2025 12:19

Stay home
Its probably for the best 🙄

Absentosaur · 23/09/2025 12:20

ps. If you’re not religiously inclined, give the Vatican a miss. It’ll cost and you’ll be bored I expect.

Exactly

IceLollyMolly · 23/09/2025 12:23

I mean if you really like Yorkshire...😀 Yes, Rome is different.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 23/09/2025 12:23

I was in Rome this weekend, it’s amazing, not run down at all and exactly what you expect. The Colosseum is one the best things I’ve ever seen, I’m still not over it
