Tips for sinusitis lasting weeks?

Have got an antibiotic but it doesn’t seem to be helping. I’ve a blocked nose, congestion, sore tender face and it’s really bothering me. How long should I expect it to last?

Do you have a nasal rinse? That helps me a lot.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 20/09/2025 15:58

I have the nasal rinse stuff to hand. Never had a problem before but when I did and eventually got the squeezy bottle the relief was bloody enormous!

Rinse, steam and antihistamines usually clears mine

Only thing that ever sorts me out when it's been going on that long is antibiotics.

Sterimar nasal rinse.

Steroid nasal spray helped me when I had sinusitis.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 20/09/2025 16:14

DH gets it terribly, due to weird shaped sinuses. He has to have antibiotics and steroids together to clear it when it flares up. He uses Beconase daily to keep it at bay.

What you need is the local equivalent of EXOMUC. This is an over the counter medication that helps loosen up the mucus in your sinus and works fast! Originally prescribed by my children's pediatrician, we have used it for decades for the whole family. I promise it works ! HTH.

If the antibiotics aren't helping, then perhaps it's just viral?
When I've had antibiotics for sinusitis in the past, I've usually been feeling loads better within 24 hours.
The nasal rinse bottles are amazing though. You can get them, and the little sachets of salts on Amazon for not much.

My husband is similar right now. He had prenisolone and antibiotics and 8 weeks later it’s still going :( the steroid nasal rinse is all that’s helped. He’s not even been able to work because he feels like hungover constantly

Rest a hot flannel on the face and breathe in Vicks to relieve the pain.

Gluten goes straight to my sinuses. After I gave up the gluten it took me a couple of years to realise that I hadn’t been sick for those two years. And I used to get awful sinusitis.

If any of us do get colds, we live on garlic and horseradish tablets - massive doses. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Viridian-Horseradish-Garlic-Complex-Vegicaps/dp/B00IG6PFMS

Saline nasal rinse with purified water. It cleans all the gunk out.

Oil burner with eucalyptus oil in. Home made soup with plenty of onions and garlic.

I’ve had sinusitis for over 5 months. Antibiotics got rid of the fever and pain but I was left with pressure in my face and a disgusting taste and smell! I use a nasal rinse every day but nothing ever comes out.

I saw an ENT specialist last week. She put a camera up my nose and into my throat and diagnosed a sinus blockage. I’m having surgery in a couple of weeks to flush and clear my sinuses and reduce my turbinates.
