&Juliet - sub Take A Break magazine nonsense. I felt a bit sorry for Romeo tbh because he literally didn't do anything wrong yet was treated like an idiotic villain by the purportedly feminist mates, but as for the supposed enby lad friend who (spoiler alert) snogged and stole her fiance on the eve of her 2nd wedding don't even get me going 🤬. Plus, don't try to preach to me about how men would like to go in women's toilets okay?
Beauty and the Beast - yes I know it's a musical but far too much singing and dancing. It takes special talent to be able to ruin Be Our Guest but they managed it.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - just didn't work. Everyone in the theatre got really excited when the Oompa-Loompa music started until these silver robot characters came out instead.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - the most self-indulgent nonsense I have ever seen. No I do not want to watch what felt like 6 hours of a train puppet being taken round the stage while the cast stood in darkness singing We'll Meet Again. Stripped every bit of charm from the book - Mr Beaver's vegan hotpot instead of freshly-caught fish? Really? Very slightly redeemed by the Wicked-style wicked witch ending to the first half which was the only reason we didn't go home in the interval but maybe we should have.
Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty - not a musical but still awful. You could really tell the dancers weren't classically trained says lumbering me but then I don't charge £45 a ticket to watch me lurch round the stage.
The touring version of Shrek has gone seriously downhill in terms of puppetry and staging which is a shame because the actors are generally phenomenally good and it's not fair on them.
There are probably loads more cos we go to the theatre a lot but they're the standouts, or the opposite. On the other hand I loved Hamilton when it came to Liverpool and wish we'd gone more often (not so much in London oddly), I wasn't looking forward to DD's choice of Moulin Rouge but thought it was brilliant and loved the theatre design and DD's favourite is Six so it's a good job I enjoy it too because we've seen and will keep seeing it a lot.
