They are the kids that like others first
That if you asked the kids who they liked, they'd have a long list

Seen this in DOAC podcast

I'm not sure it was like this when I was at school, when I was at school the popular kids were the meanest!

What do you think

Whats DOAC?

I think my DS1 (year 5) would use popular in the sense of 'has lots of friends' rather than 'is cool' like when I was in school.
I'm not even sure kids use the word cool tbh. I've only heard my DS2 (year 1) use in when describing lunchboxes/nice t shirts/carnivorous dinosaurs not people.

Yes, my son is popular in school but he just makes friends with everyone.

I think there are two meanings of 'popular'.

Popular, traditional meaning: people like them. Yes they are probably the friendly, nice, kids , with good social skills.

Popular, more modern meaning: the look at me kids, that people want to be 'in' with so they don't get picked on. Loud, slightly mean, make their presence felt in any room, care about their group, not so much about other.

I agree with this. I think the first lot are the primary school kids. The second lot are the secondary school kids. My kids called them ‘the populars’ and stayed well away in high school.
