Hi, I’m in the middle of trying to work out what I want in my new kitchen. Can you please tell me what type of worktop is most durable? Thank you.

Suppose it depends what you mean by durable.

Stainless steel is pretty durable in the respect it is hard to crack and stain, burn and chip. But you can scratch it and over time it builds up a load of microscratches.

Granite can take a lot of heat, but you could probably crack it if you hit it hard enough and if it is not sealed then it may stain as it is porous. You can chip the edges.

Quartz is pretty stain proof and good resistance to heat though not bombproof and hard to scratch, but chips and again would probably crack if you hit it hard enough.

Wood will burn and stain but does not chip as easily*

I don't know about the rest.

I think the key is to get a durable surface and try your best to look after it rather than getting a surface that you think might be indestructable (none of them are and they all have different strengths and weaknesses) and being dissapointed when you bash the crap out of it and it ruins it.

That’s a very thorough answer- thank you so much for taking the time to write so much info.
