What are these stains!

my daughter randomly wakes up with these marks on her pillowcases and this morning, her sleep top. She never dyes her hair, no pens in the bed. I’m puzzled what could it be?! She went to bed with wet hair last night could that cause it?? It’s like denim dye transfer but she never wears jeans so that can’t be it? Any ideas??

It sort of looks like damp mould

Thanks. She did go to bed with wet hair could it be that? They are sort of purple blue more than grey/ black?

Do you have a cat? Mine brings in black ink from ink cap mushrooms.

gratefulheart · 18/09/2025 07:18

No cat no!

Does she wear a hair band/tie?

gratefulheart · 18/09/2025 07:29

Yes her hair was in a plait but I couldn’t tell you the colour of the band? Could it be wet hair plus dye from the scrunchy and that’s transferred as she’s slept??

I’m anxious they are something to do with bed bugs

Could be this, if it was the same hairband? Try a different one? Does it happen with dry hair?

I was wondering whether it's some sort of reaction between e.g. body lotion and fabric softener. Try changing one thing at a time to see if it eliminates the marking?

Can't imagine it has anything to do with bed bugs!

if it's a scrunchie then it's almost certainly that. Take the one she was wearing, wet it and put it on some kitchen paper.

Cadenza12 · 18/09/2025 07:49

Probably not a good idea for go to bed with wet hair. I think that it's some sort of die bleeding out. Seems most likely.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 18/09/2025 07:57

Bad for your hair, especially if it's tied up wet in some way, and your bedding to go to bed with it wet. Agree this looks like dye transfer from a scrunchie.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 18/09/2025 08:00

Wet hair plus a hair tie is your answer.

I wouldn’t recommend her going to bed with wet hair as it can damage both her hair and the bedding if it then sits their damp.

Whataretalkingabout · 18/09/2025 08:01

Are you sure she doesn't dye her hair?

gratefulheart · 18/09/2025 08:34

Thanks all. Completely sure she doesn’t dye her hair. It’s blonde for a start and she is against everything that is not authentic… hair colour included

@tumblingdowntherabbithole why does having wet hair damage it? Isn't an hair dryer worse for damaging hair?
