Free Speech, in the American context, means the right under the first amendment to speak freely without fear of being arrested by the government.
The founders of the USA were groups of people who had fled there because of religious persecution. This was important to them.
It does not mean that an employer cannot fire someone who does not align with their organisational views, it does not mean that other citizens might find that speech so abhorrent that they shun the speaker.
As for CC - well the left is reaping the rewards of it's own decision to embed that into society. As Roseanne Barr points out - a woman I find odious, but does she have the right to be odious without losing her livelihood just for her views?
