The Outfits - State Visit

CallMeEvelyn · 18/09/2025 02:34

This is not a thread about politics, but about clothes, please

I usually look forward to seeing Melania's outfits, however I am really underwhelmed looking at them during this state visit.

The Burberry coat was too long and overbearing, even considering she's a tall woman.

The huge purple hat and the outfit were very boxy/heavy/square and somewhat mismatched.

The state banquet dress is a disaster! It's totally inappropriate! It doesn't suit her either.

Did she change her stylist? Her outfits are suddenly so much worse!

FWIW I think Kate's outfits look fab, although I am concerned if she's feeling well looking at her, I hope she's ok.

You need to be here for all the discussions:

Totally agree about the coat!

Overtheatlantic · 18/09/2025 02:40

I absolutely agree! The evening gown in particular looked more like it was for a Monaco event. The grey suit and purple hat was very Brutalist. I thought Catherine’s outfits were fabulous though.

CallMeEvelyn · 18/09/2025 02:46

Ah! It's beyond Royal Style though, just for fun to chat about the outfits over these few days really.

Glad I'm not the only one disappointed!

Definitely getting Monaco vibes, too.

Also whoever is styling Catherine's hair (parking the discussion whether it is real) needs to start wearing glasses too, the length and the style aren't working for her. Why not try a lob that isn't so long and overpowering, and a darker shade. I don't get it. A tiara requires an updo IMO as well.

The exaggerated almost-floor-length trench coat is very of the moment in the USA right now; I don't love it in general but Milania has the height to pull it off better than most. (Also the ghost of Margaret Thatcher is going to haunt her for wearing a blouse with the word "society" on it.)

Agree that Kate comes off best overall; she always gives a sense of really knowing what suits her and makes it work within the framework of what she's "supposed" to wear for a specific occasion. I like the riskier colours of Melania's dark violet hat and candy pink dress, but I don't think those are the best colours for her. I feel like she'd be better in warmer tones: maybe warm olive, salmon, burnt orange, caramel, warm chocolate brown, metallic gold or bronze. Camilla's super-saturated colors like the cobalt dress also feel kind of not quite right for her; I understand why she wants to go very bold but she herself is quite delicate looking.

Imo a tiara looks so much better set on beautifully swept up hair and Kate looks particularly stunning with an updo.
But her clothes and her behaviour are always impeccable. Though not of Royal blood it seems she was born for her role in life. Wills chose exceedingly well.
Beautiful Melania looked like a standard lamp in the daytime yesterday. She was almost breaking her neck staring ceilingward in St George's Chapel from under that ludicrous broad, overhanging brim.
I wonder why Camilla and Kate don't feel the need to obscure the top halves of their own faces to avoid overshadowing their husbands?!

Untailored · 18/09/2025 06:39

I agree Melania is usually better dressed. The belt on the evening gown made it look too casual.

Kate dressed impeccably but then she always does.

Thelankyone · 18/09/2025 06:39

I think Kate’s hair looks fantastic with the tiara, very youthful and flattering.

surprised anyone thinks she looks unwell, on this I’m with trump, I think she looks very healthy,

Thelostjewels · 18/09/2025 07:08

Outfits dowdy earlier on

I thought Kate looked sensational . Absotutly sensational and I really liked melanias lighter colours.

Sourisblanche · 18/09/2025 07:11

Gosh just had a look and I think Kate looks bloody gorgeous at the state dinner. She’s a real asset to the UK.

Thelostjewels · 18/09/2025 07:19

@Sourisblanche doesnt she . Imagine her children watching her get ready ....that's our mum
William looks good ,maybe it's his age but he never looks kingly to me.
Charles for all his faults is an incredible dessert and he dresses like a king and seems kingly

Cbamuch · 18/09/2025 08:04

When I saw Melania at the banquet my initial view of what she was wearing was a bralet with bare flesh. The colour of the band was almost the colour of her skin. I thought the dress looked very inappropriate.

Whenthetimeisright · 18/09/2025 08:10

I'm not a royalist at all but having looked at this thread and read some of the posts by the fanatic royal watchers on the link I'm quite indignant about the criticism of Kate's hair.
I.think she is beautiful and she comes over as such a lovely person and what on earth are people doing nit picking about her hair when she looks so lovely?

Yeah I was surprised by that, and the comment she looks unwell or should cut her hair short, Reads as mean/jealous but done with faux concern and head tilt to cover it up. I’m no royalist but think she looks great.

AmandaHoldensLips · 18/09/2025 08:28

I was under the impression that bare shoulders at a formal dinner is a no-no from an etiquette point of view.

That’s exactly what I thought too!

Libertylawn · 18/09/2025 08:53

Catherine was on top form by the looks of it. There are a few shots of her looking at Trump that says “Tangoman, you are in my power now!” Go Kate.

I thought the same. I did a double take and was trying to work out if she was wearing a sari style. The colour was too harsh in my opinion. A shame because she usually dresses very well.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/09/2025 09:03

9.5/10 for Kate (should have worn her hair up with the amazing gold dress)

4/10 for Melania - liked the trench coat but the hat was ridiculous and she should have covered her shoulders at the banquet

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/09/2025 09:06

Ps I really bet Kate was horrified by all of it but as per usual she came across an absolute pro.

Thelankyone · 18/09/2025 09:54

Apparently Melanie’s dress wasn’t as vibrant as the pics show, it was a butter cream colour with a pale lilac sash.

CrushingOnRubies · 18/09/2025 10:14

When I first saw Melania’s dress I thought she was baring her midriff, because of the nude belt. Had to do a double take. Not sure highlighter yellow with a huge slit on the slide is that appropriate for a state dinner.

thought Kate & Camilla looked lovely

1apenny2apenny · 18/09/2025 10:18

The main thing that struck me was how ridiculous it was to at both Kate and Melenia were wearing high heels walking over the grass. When will we accept women just wearing flats?!

Just looked at more photos and no, sorry, the yellow Herrera gown is awful and does absolutely nothing for Melania. Not appropriate for the occasion either, disappointing.
