Car insurance for learner drivers?

Ds is learning to drive and I was hoping to add him to my car insurance now that he’s close to taking his test, for extra practice.
My insurance is one of the online ones and when I’ve tried to enquire this morning the bot said something complicated like the learner needs insurance, and they don’t do learner insurance?
When I was learning, my sister also used to take me out in her car, and it was just as simple as adding me onto her car insurance with a phone call.
I can’t ring and speak to anybody, due to it being online only, but is this a thing now? Does ds have to get his own learner insurance, rather than me adding him on to mine? Can anybody explain it in simple terms??

I think it depends on the company and different companies have different rules. When I asked to add my 17 year old son to my insurance they said ‘no’ but due to the fact they didn’t insure under 25 year olds. I then took out learner insurance with Marmalade who specialise in learner insurance.

We took out a learner policy with Collingwood when ds was learning. You need a car with an existing insurance policy, but the collingwood one was in his name and covered him as a learner driver while being supervised. It was about £120 for six months. It expired when he passed his test, so you will need a new policy when ds passes.

They do shorter than six months policies as well.

We used Cuvva for DP, it’s an extra policy independent of yours since my insurance wouldn’t allow him to be added.
