I’m going on holiday to 2nd May 1997 because the present world is so awful - anybody want to come too?

I am so depressed with all the shit.
Trump
War
Reform
Incels
Tate
Porn
Trad wives
Gender Ideology
Labour losing it’s way
Terrorism
Shop lifting
Influencers
Self obsession
Children obsessed with phones never going out
Climate change being ignored
Teenagers modelling themselves on US gangs
Potholes
NHS being run down
No banks
Sewage in the sea and rivers
Decline of good manners

I have had enough. Unfortunately I don’t have a delorean so I will have to do the best I can on my own.

I’ve picked 2nd May 1997 because I remember driving to work that day so happy as New Labour had just got in after a lifetime of tory rule.

I was full of hope and optimism. I was a community nurse then and pretty much all of my colleagues felt the same. It was a happy day.

I am not saying it was a perfect time, it certainly wasn’t but I would take it warts and all over today’s terror in a heartbeat.

I have decided that I am going to have a week in a bubble where I don’t see any news. I don’t speak to anybody who I don’t already know to be polite. I will only watch telly or films or read books from 1997 or before. I will only eat food from the same (not out of date!) too as part of the experience.
I even still have a few clothes from Miss Selfridge (my shop of choice back then) and my ancient levi 501s so will be wearing these. Clothes actually lasted then!

If it makes me feel better I may never return to the present.

I want to come! I was a teenager and I spent most of my time listening to all that shit music… and hanging around in those shops with candles and joss sticks and sun and moon illustrations on everything…

I had moon earrings!
In fact I think I still have them so they can add to my ensemble

I’m in! The night Labour got in after so many years of Tory rule was a banger. Brit pop, Cool Britannia, the whole lot. And I went back to school as a mature student and it was genuinely the best period of my life. So hell yeah!

Forourfuture · 16/09/2025 09:11

Yes please, OP. I still remember that day - I was in my 20s and living in London and having the best time.

Are 2 of these tribute acts?!

😆

No, sadly just bog standard auto correct.

Id quite fancy listening to the Spice Gyros though

Happyjoe · 16/09/2025 09:13

As an old punk/goth, the thing about the music is that it was still close enough to hear a lot of the 80's bands too, on the radio and still touring - the late 70's and 80's was superb for alternative music, I just had to avoid the likes of Jason and Kylie, ha. Some of the more alternative 90's was good too, it wasn't all about Oasis and Blur.

Dontcallmescarface · 16/09/2025 09:13

I'd love to but persuading DD to act like she's 5 again may be a bit of a challenge 😁

spicetails · 16/09/2025 09:05

Fortunately only in your opinion.

It really is not. Is it so difficult to understand that other people have different tastes in music? There are only two bands that I actually liked out of the list that you wrote. The rest I got no enjoyment from.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 16/09/2025 08:45

Missing the point

She’s really not. Step away from the news. The difference is that in 1997 you’d not got a clue about a lot of the awful things that were happening in the world.

It sounds like a Lazy Suzan for spices; the cookery Wheel of Fortune.

I still have my black teardrop earrings with crescent moons and stars on - my teen DD covets them. Her wardrobe is scarily similar to mine and she also likes ramen although thankfully not after a hangover which was my specialty

Agree there was so much optimism. Sure Start centres, a real focus on mental health, new things coming from all over the world increasing choice in shops (might have been the beginning of the end to be honest, no one needs so many versions of bread).

Pretty sure I've eaten them

I’m up for a bit of time travel but I’ll go for 2005 please- I was 18 had my friends all round me, health issues hadn’t started yet and it was a bloody great year. 1997 will take me back to being 10 and I really really don’t want to go back to my parents screaming at each other constantly please.

pinklilys · 16/09/2025 09:23

Dear god no thanks. 15 month old son with ADHD (obviously not diagnosed but we knew something was off) and my DH having chemotherapy.

Ill take my chances now thanks.

Don't forget in the very new future you will have dodgy dossiers/illegal invasions. New labour may have had a good theme tune, and an excellent economic inheritance but that didn't last long.

That was my point exactly.

Well, the OP may be fed up with what is going on in our country and beyond (it does seem to be going downhill fast) but still be content in her family and work life. To be concerned and fed up with what is going on doesn't mean that the two are connected. So, really it's missing the point and presuming an awful lot.

CarrotJams · 16/09/2025 09:26

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/09/2025 08:29

Rose tinted glasses mate - and most of the pop music was shite around then.

Sorry but that isn’t true I loved Hanson at that time therefore the music must have been amazing 🤩 😂

Bonden · 16/09/2025 09:26

I love that one thing the OP lists about what she dislikes now is “self obsession” and then a load of posters give, er, “self obsessed” reasons for why they would not want to go back to that time.
the OP is talking about how globally things have changed for the worse, and that the world feels different in a bad way. Not that her nan was alive in 97 or she loved the music then.

yes OP i ve packed my bags and am coming with you.

2002 is miles away. It was a far better run than the recent 12 year shitshow of the Tories and the nasty news stories every month. I was actually proud to be part of a new way of thinking; Mel and Sue were on the TV and more funny and intelligent women were mainstream than ever before. People were questioning the weird national obsession with Benny Hill...

ITSJUSTBRIDGET · 16/09/2025 09:30

I was 18 in 1997 and honestly I don't think teenagers now realise just how good the 90's were. The music was fab, no phones, going on a pub crawl, meeting loads of people you knew, actually talking to them. Then at the end of the night a pub would play living on a prayer by Bon Jovi and absolutely everyone would join in - such good times.

I fail to see how 90% of the above has any impact on your daily life whatsoever 😂

Andrew Tate? Shop lifting?! Influencers?! Teenagers modelling themselves on US gangs (don't even know what this means)? "Trad wives" (WTF?)?

How does any of this affect you?!!

Yep everything post 9/11 feels like an entirely different word to the 90s vibe of hopeful possibility.

Mel & Sue's light/late lunch was way ahead of it's time and never got the credit it deserved. Wish they'd bring it back as it'd still work perfectly now.

@NarnianQueen I found my 80s /90s moon jewellery so had to post a pic!

I'll come. DH and I were planning our wedding at that time so I can go back and tell us not to book what turned out to be a god awful venue!
