I’m going on holiday to 2nd May 1997 because the present world is so awful - anybody want to come too?

I am so depressed with all the shit.
Trump
War
Reform
Incels
Tate
Porn
Trad wives
Gender Ideology
Labour losing it’s way
Terrorism
Shop lifting
Influencers
Self obsession
Children obsessed with phones never going out
Climate change being ignored
Teenagers modelling themselves on US gangs
Potholes
NHS being run down
No banks
Sewage in the sea and rivers
Decline of good manners

I have had enough. Unfortunately I don’t have a delorean so I will have to do the best I can on my own.

I’ve picked 2nd May 1997 because I remember driving to work that day so happy as New Labour had just got in after a lifetime of tory rule.

I was full of hope and optimism. I was a community nurse then and pretty much all of my colleagues felt the same. It was a happy day.

I am not saying it was a perfect time, it certainly wasn’t but I would take it warts and all over today’s terror in a heartbeat.

I have decided that I am going to have a week in a bubble where I don’t see any news. I don’t speak to anybody who I don’t already know to be polite. I will only watch telly or films or read books from 1997 or before. I will only eat food from the same (not out of date!) too as part of the experience.
I even still have a few clothes from Miss Selfridge (my shop of choice back then) and my ancient levi 501s so will be wearing these. Clothes actually lasted then!

If it makes me feel better I may never return to the present.

Rose tinted glasses mate - and most of the pop music was shite around then.

Are you kidding?!

Oasis, Robbie Williams, Nirvana. Radiohead. Garbage, Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics, The Verve, Dido, more dance music than I can list, Soundgarden, Alamo’s Morrisette, Sheryl Crowe, The Cranberries, Lighthouse Family, Spice Giros, M-People.

FirstCuppa · 16/09/2025 08:56

I miss that the best thing about the computer in our school library was Encarta.

I also miss doing the silly "Which Spice Girl should you go on holiday with?" quizzes in the magazines targeted at 10 year olds pretending they were 16.

I do wonder why those same magazines often told us how to give "him" a better orgasm...

Yep I’ll come too. I’d just finished uni but had a few months before I needed to get a job. Music was fab, no responsibilities and New Labour were so exciting and hopeful. Now just let me book my V97 ticket over the phone and I’ll be grand…

Missing the point

Probably better to start a thread about all that OP!

Chipsahoy · 16/09/2025 08:58

In 1997 I was being horrifically abused, so no thank you.
I’ve worked hard to heal and build a life that is peaceful. Yes things are difficult but they always have been in some way or another. Stop reading the news. Concentrate on the community around you and your own lives.

Happyjoe · 16/09/2025 08:59

I hear you, things have got so much worse and I was born in the 70's. Seen things change and tbh, now is the worst time for a long time. So yes please to your holiday, sounds delightful!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 16/09/2025 09:01

@Mrsmunchofmunchington PLEASE can I come too? I was so hoping to feel that same vibe of hope and optimism on the day after election day last year but it all felt a bit damp squib and hasn't really improved. Yes it all went sour but I'd love to experience the summer of 97 again music, fashion, telly, magazines...

And if we could stop in on 2012, the last epic summer I remember on the way home that would also be lovely.

You are missing the point and yet keep on about it!! Amusing.

Antimimisti · 16/09/2025 09:02

1997 wasn't a great year for me - I was having an awful time at work. I'd like to go back to June 1992 when I'd just finished my A-Levels, please.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/09/2025 09:02

FirstCuppa · 16/09/2025 08:50

Elastica, Skunk Anansie, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Guns n Roses, The Cranberries, No Doubt...?

So much other shite and some of those were at their peak earlier in the 90s. You only have to watch old episodes of TOTP!

champagnetrial · 16/09/2025 09:03

Unfortunately I can't come as I'm about to give birth, but if you could invite Diana along so she can say to Dodi, I'm so sorry, I've already had my holiday this year, that would be awesome. 😞

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 16/09/2025 09:03

Yes please. I was 12 so felt like I was practically an adult without any of the adulting shit.

Plus Harry Potter is about to be published and I'd love to be able to read it for the first time again.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/09/2025 09:03

I was on a term abroad from university. Grammar classes in the morning, lunch on the way home in an outdoor cafe and then sunbathing in the park until 6ish, then heading home to have a cheap dinner and get changed before going out until late. Most nights. I don’t know how I had the energy!

In a month I’ll be going travelling with my best friend for a couple of weeks then heading home to stay with my parents and younger brothers for the summer to take up my TEFL job as an EF teacher and group leader, again going out 6 nights a week after until the early hours! Would defo go back for a holiday if not permanently.

NarnianQueen · 16/09/2025 09:04

I want to come! I was a teenager and I spent most of my time listening to all that shit music… and hanging around in those shops with candles and joss sticks and sun and moon illustrations on everything…

spicetails · 16/09/2025 09:04

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 16/09/2025 08:56

Yup. Life was so much better

If you pop round to my parents' house and have a dig around in their kitchen, you could probably find some genuine pre-1997 food 😂

All dire

Fortunately only in your opinion.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 16/09/2025 09:06

Things can only get betterrrrrrr

mackerella · 16/09/2025 09:06

Please can I come too? I'd just voted for the first time ever, and was thrilled to have a new government - everything seemed so optimistic and positive! I was about to take my second year exams at university, and was spending every minute when I wasn't revising listening and dancing to drum and bass, progressive house, big beat, trip hop... it wasn't all Blur and Oasis!

MaggieBsBoat · 16/09/2025 09:06

I’m right there. I’ll be looking forward to going to university. Listening to cracking tunes. Drinking too much, caring too much, wearing thongs and fiddling out how to use my first email address properly!

I used to love all those shops. And Athena too. What I wouldn't give to flick through the posters in Athena now, then off to the body shop for some white musk followed by the newsagents to pick up a Fuse bar and a copy of the latest Shout/Sugar/Bliss/Just Seventeen magazine!

Are 2 of these tribute acts?!

I had moon earrings!
In fact I think I still have them so they can add to my ensemble
