I’m going on holiday to 2nd May 1997 because the present world is so awful - anybody want to come too?

I am so depressed with all the shit.
Trump
War
Reform
Incels
Tate
Porn
Trad wives
Gender Ideology
Labour losing it’s way
Terrorism
Shop lifting
Influencers
Self obsession
Children obsessed with phones never going out
Climate change being ignored
Teenagers modelling themselves on US gangs
Potholes
NHS being run down
No banks
Sewage in the sea and rivers
Decline of good manners

I have had enough. Unfortunately I don’t have a delorean so I will have to do the best I can on my own.

I’ve picked 2nd May 1997 because I remember driving to work that day so happy as New Labour had just got in after a lifetime of tory rule.

I was full of hope and optimism. I was a community nurse then and pretty much all of my colleagues felt the same. It was a happy day.

I am not saying it was a perfect time, it certainly wasn’t but I would take it warts and all over today’s terror in a heartbeat.

I have decided that I am going to have a week in a bubble where I don’t see any news. I don’t speak to anybody who I don’t already know to be polite. I will only watch telly or films or read books from 1997 or before. I will only eat food from the same (not out of date!) too as part of the experience.
I even still have a few clothes from Miss Selfridge (my shop of choice back then) and my ancient levi 501s so will be wearing these. Clothes actually lasted then!

If it makes me feel better I may never return to the present.

thanks but no.

i see all you list and it is depressing
BUT

I love my teens and they wouldn’t have been born back then, I love my job, I love my home and I have a fabulous holiday with my two closest friends coming up.

So I’ll pass

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/09/2025 08:29

Rose tinted glasses mate - and most of the pop music was shite around then.

Thefirstdelicious · 16/09/2025 08:29

Maybe get off mumsnet and give the news a break? Most of this list won’t actually be impacting your life in any shape or form on a day to day level

Thefirstdelicious · 16/09/2025 08:29

It sounds like you’ve been reading way too much DM OP.

JacknDiane · 16/09/2025 08:35

Can I come?

If I read the Daily Mail I wouldn’t be nostalgic for a labour government.
But thanks for illustrating one of my points though.

Actually, you’ve reminded me of one of the best bits!

Sounds like a great idea to me!

I often think about that time and remember meeting a friend and we were so excited about Blair getting in - things really did get better for a while.

Your personal life Op…. Happy? Fulfilled? Partner? Work? Children? Social life? Health?

I’ll come. I will have some A levels to sit in May/June though and I can’t remember any of the content…

I had just met DH. I remember the excitement of Blair getting in. But I agree the music was dire, fashion not great either, it was the days of lads mags, no internet and having to find everything out by Ceefax or newspapers, no thanks.

FirstCuppa · 16/09/2025 08:46

Duuude! I'm stressing out because I've got my GCSE's in a couple of months. I am going to be expelled for having pot at school and never get to say goodbye to most people in my year, but I don't know it yet!

I'm worrying about the fact everyone else seems to be revising but I am avoiding sitting down as I have too much energy.

I think my boyfriend is cheating on me but I have no way to prove it.

My step-dad is also going to die just before my French aural exam.

It's actually quite a busy time for me back in 1997! Keanu is in his prime though, so that's a win.

spicetails · 16/09/2025 08:46

Yes please. Literally the best 5 years of my life. I’ll need some notice though as I’ll have to put in me holiday to my wanker boss at the pub in the minimum wage job tgat was the best and most fun job I’ll ever have.

I agree the lads mags were one of the warts

You didn't own Fresh Hits 1997, clearly! Some bangers on that.

Although I wouldn't go back to then. Ihave to disagree!! The 90s was the best for music. It probablly helps that I was 16 in 97, so that was my era. Beats the rubbish modern stuff they have these days.

Elastica, Skunk Anansie, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Guns n Roses, The Cranberries, No Doubt...?

ILikeDinosaurs · 16/09/2025 08:50

Give me 1992.

This isn't going to help anyone, if anything people need to be more engaged with the news, this shit has been creeping up on us behind the scenes. While we're drepressed they are getting organised. And it WILL impact our lives day to day.

spicetails · 16/09/2025 08:51

My heart will be about to be broken by a total wanker of a copper who’s eldest daughter is only 7 years younger than me (and who will tell me years later I was the best and nicest of the women to be paraded through his home) so a girls holiday will be just perfect timing.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 16/09/2025 08:51

I’m listening to Des’ree and Gabrielle and drinking Strongbow 1080
Eating spicy nik naks and a king sized mars bar that would feed a family for a week

I’ll come with you OP. The world before the internet was better I think - I loved the late 90s, so much optimism! Also, to the pp who said music was bad - I disagree! I love the songs of summer 97 - Hanson, The Verve, Olive, so many good tunes that take me right back. Fashion was good too. I loved it!

Makingpeace · 16/09/2025 08:53

I'll grab the TV remote and switch it over to Bamboozle on Teletext on C4. Anyone else want to play?

CreepingCrone · 16/09/2025 08:53

Yea please, I'd love to see my mum again

No, not for me, didn't like any of them. The 80s were my era.
