Reform wants to bring the UK into line with the UAE Confused

Just don't call them thick

In regards to what?

Notonthestairs · 22/09/2025 09:27

DuncinToffee · 22/09/2025 08:45

Farage is going to expel hundreds and thousands of immigrants, incl people like me with settled status or indefinite leave to remain.

Ofcourse he is citing CPS numbers that have been withdrawn by its own authors as they made several major errors

Funnily enough the Times only covers this aspect in its final paragraphs.

Maybe thats because it would be unworkable and economically damaging (the British Chamber of Commerce didnt appreciate Labour's changes let alone this). Heaven only knows what impact it would have on the NHS.

But I suppose if you were prepared to vote for Brexit knowing the economic damage predicted, this policy has the added frisson of destablising other people's lives.

I am so sorry Duncintoffee. It must feel horrible to be one of Farage's targets. I wonder what all the Reform lovers will think of that.

I expect they'll be all for it. 🤮😡

I see Yusuf says it will be applied retrospectively.

"Reform said anyone who had indefinite leave to remain would have it rescinded – and would need to reapply for a visa – throwing the lives and status of many families into uncertainty"

They are disgusting. But I wonder if that would actually be legally possible?

Notonthestairs · 22/09/2025 09:32

its not legally possible now but they will rewrite the legislation.

Notonthestairs · 22/09/2025 09:34

I suppose they are aiming to get rid of the NHS anyway. So its fits in the larger picture.

What about all those Reform supporters on MN who claim they have friends and family who are immigrants or who claim to be immigrants themselves? Surely they won't support this?

(Unless of course, they are fibbing).

Immigration, for the moment at least

As has been pointed out on Bluesky this is an attempt by Farage to out flank Yaxley Lennon.
Farage can't afford to lose too much attention or too many voters to Habib/Yaxley Lennon.
The extremists are calling the shots.

Notonthestairs · 22/09/2025 10:03

Not to mention this from Sunder Katwala -

“Reform's ban on dual citizenship is going to require a rapid u-turn over Ireland.

It would be pretty mad to apply it to call existing dual nationals, but maybe they will fancy & welcome the row in the cases beyond Ireland, like Israel, USA, Canada, Australia,Nigeria, India, and Pakistan”

surely this contravenes the GFA? Not that they’d care too much.

DuncinToffee · 22/09/2025 10:05

And this from Sam Freedman

The fact they don't have detailed plans. The fact it's ethically repugnant. The fact that it would be an economic disaster.

All of these things are what chaotic authoritarianism looks like. As we're seeing in the US.

Yes, it is basically forced re-migration.

Eta: "repugnant" that is the perfect description of this policy. And Reform generally.

bombastix · 22/09/2025 10:10

All of this is possible and predictable. It’s repatriation by another name. As if they were worried about asylum seekers as a single issue. It’s all about “legal migration”.

You could change it retrospectively incidentally because not having a British citizenship is an insecure way to be in the UK. ILR is not a right but a legal privilege which can be removed or the terms changed. That can be changed and it is not very complicated to do. Ireland could be an except… after all, doesn’t Robinson have an Irish passport?

Immigration rules can change at any time. They change very often. The safest way is to be a UK citizen and not rely on ILR.

bombastix · 22/09/2025 10:16

Also a clear statement of intent to destroy the Conservative Party and the Boriswave. Reform have really ramped up their propaganda on Badenoch as being an incompetent too.

I did look at the possible results from current polling. Reform would have about 370 seats. Labour around 120. The Tories…. 20

Notonthestairs · 22/09/2025 10:26

I don’t think anyone genuinely expects Badenoch to continue do they? Jenrick hasn’t stopped campaigning since the leadership election.

bombastix · 22/09/2025 10:32

This from the Telegraph… Reform call her Santa Claus because she gives them a gift each day. Cutting

60% of those who have ILR are European nationals. The deal was made under Brexit, as part of the withdrawal agreement.

Reform don’t care do they? They would be happy to review everyone on ILR and give new terms. It is not an adequate legal status in the UK because you can change it! Presumably this class would be invited to apply for a passport or asked to leave. That’s why a passport is needed, not ILR.

placemats · 22/09/2025 10:43

By that reasoning then everyone living in the UK would be required to have a passport to prove national identity.

bombastix · 22/09/2025 10:46

Well isn’t that pretty much what they want? You either have a passport or you have guest arbiter visa. No ILR.

bombastix · 22/09/2025 10:48

I mean how does it work? Nigel has a German passport… I guess there will be some serious loopholes if you have money or earn large amounts

pointythings · 22/09/2025 10:50

At least the Dutch government brought in legislation that will allow us to naturalised and retain our citizenship if Reform bring this in. But I will just sell up and leave, because it will destroy the UK economy.

placemats · 22/09/2025 10:53

It's a moot exercise in discussing how it'll work because it's never going to happen.

Zia Yusuf said it would be "done on a staggered and orderly basis to allow businesses to train British workers to replace them."

That's costly in terms of time and money, will these businesses be expecting expensive compensation to cover the shortfall?

It's, as usual, back of a fag packet politics.

Following the Orange Fuhrers lead, what is the law ?

And ?

Laws are like Pringles. Once you pop, you just can't stop.
