What is causing DH this much pain?

DH started with a fever beginning of last week, with muscle aches. Assumed it was a virus. The pain then became concentrated in one leg and a red line appeared in his groin. He had a phone appointment with the doctor (well a physician assistant) and they prescribed antibiotics and said cellulitis.

The fever calmed down but the pain got worse and worse and the redness was now from groin to ankle. Called 111 and they sent him up to hospital for assessment. He had IV antibiotics on the day unit and they suggested it could be Phlebitis. But the level of pain has been much, much more than everything online suggests this should be.

He was discharged on the virtual ward and we had to call yesterday to ask if they could help with the pain. They prescribed dihydrocodeine and that’s barely touching it. He had a big dark line down his leg still.

They’ve called him back in for an ultrasound but they’ve said his blood tests don’t suggest any clotting. Everyone seems a bit baffled.

How can I best advocate for him? What questions should we ask? He can’t go on like this. His sleep is broken, he can’t stand or move.

Thank you.

Back to a&e. Don’t delay.

It sounds exactly like a blood clot. When is the ultrasound? The blood test would usually show up the presence of a clot but a false negative is possible if he is on other medications?

I would keep a close eye on him and if his temperature goes back up take him straight in to be treated as though it were sepsis. Presume he is still on antibiotics?

In any event he hasn’t been seen by a consultant and if this is lymphangiatis or similar he will need more and probably quite specific antibiotics. It could also be a secondary infection to a fungal infection. Is he a keen gardener?

Pain was excruciating so we went back to the hospital. No blood clots but severe lymphangitis. Gold star to @Libertylawn ! We actually managed to see a doctor and he’s on morphine now and having some tests to identify the right antibiotic.
