Ocado

I’m a long time user of Ocado but two things are putting me off. First thing is prices. Yes I know everything is more expensive now but Ocado seems more expensive.

The second thing is products unavailable or absent from delivery.

I recently ordered a joint of pork to cook for visitors, along with a load of other groceries. I paid £5 delivery charge, as I wanted a specific time to suit me. The pork didn’t come and there wasn’t any substitute.

I had to go out shopping, which completely wasted the £5 and I had the added inconvenience. I complained to Ocado, who just said sorry we didn’t have the pork.

That's annoying but missing items can happen with any delivery service and in my experience Ocado are one of the better ones.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 14/09/2025 10:28

I have used Ocado for years every week and hardly ever have a missing item or a substitution.
There is also their price promise so if my shopping would have been cheaper with Tesco I get a voucher for the difference.
I think they are head and shoulders better than other online grocers plus their delivery drivers are far more polite and helpful and my shopping arrives packed in bags.

Me too. So rare to have anything missing - if I can order it, it almost always arrives. (I would have been raging about your pork too though, so I get it.)

Plenty of decently priced stuff on there too.

Longtime shopper but lately have switched to a more infrequent Ocado delivery, filling in the gaps from cheaper shops. I get the Ocado bits we like, and the heavy stuff, but means I can get yellow-sticker offers etc and cheaper veg/fruit elsewhere

Luddite26 · 14/09/2025 10:34

No problems to report here . Long time user. And my DD has used weekly since the beginning and cannot fault them at all.
But if you're not happy don't use them.

It may depend on where your local warehouse is - we rarely have subs/missing.

The reasons I’ve stuck with Ocado:

  • I find it much easier to compare prices online than physically in stores (who has time to visit four different supermarkets to check stock and prices).
  • i frequently buy things on offer - eg I don’t think I’ve paid full price for washing capsules/dishwasher tabs etc for years.
  • I don’t drive so works for me to have heavy items delivered
  • We work all week so avoid the heaving supermarkets at the weekend
  • i do use the local non chain greengrocers for fruit and veg at the weekends
  • I tried Tesco and Sainsbury’s and it was abysmal - late deliveries and lots of subs/missing

I have used Ocado for a long time and I don't have any problems with them. I hardly ever have missing items, or even substitutes. And as others have said, the price promise means that if items were cheaper at Tesco you get a voucher for the amount. I have a smart pass so can have a delivery any time.

I've been using Ocado for about 15 years and wouldn't use any other grocery delivery service. They'll bring the shopping into the house for you if you want them to, they're always on time and sometimes early; in this case they'll ring you first. The drivers are always well turned out and friendly and you get 10p back for every bag you return. I hardly ever get substitutions and often get a voucher if I could have had my shopping from Tesco cheaper. They have pretty good flash sales at the end of the ordering process and extensive half price sales. On the odd occasion I've had something that's leaked/been squashed, the request a refund process is very simple and they always honour it. Oh, and you get their free magazine every month!

You got in contact with them, to complain about them being out of stock of a product? Huh? What exactly are you suggesting they did wrong? Sell to other customers when they should be reserving items ✨especially for you

tinyspiny · 15/09/2025 13:53

I like Ocado , I don’t use them personally as I had enough of internet shopping during the pandemic and prefer to pick my own stuff but my sister uses them and often gets me bits . This weekend she has been unwell and did an Ocado order Saturday morning for Sunday morning ( she has a delivery pass ) , I went yesterday to cook dinner for the family and my daughter said it was the nicest chicken she’s had in ages . I can’t comment on prices as I do my shopping between M&S and Tesco in a 70/30 type ratio and I should imagine Ocado is on a par with that .

To be fair, the Ocado model is exactly that "they should be reserving items especially for you".

It's a very different model of operation to other online supermarket offerings.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 15/09/2025 15:33

Ocado regular, and I shop wisely, buying items on special, M&S own brand, hard to get elsewhere items. Rarely have items missing or subs, but I order a week ahead, with some fruit and veg / some meat bought from independents locally. Price wise, generally good and comparable for what we purchase with elsewhere, especially given quality.

Well yes, that’s exactly what they do. Reserve things just for you.

I’ve had a right old carry on with them this week where half my order wasn’t delivered and then they wouldn’t deliver the missing half without me getting my basket to £40.

I definitely think Ocado should have reimbursed your delivery fee.

millymae · 15/09/2025 16:55

I’m not a regular user of Ocado but have had a delivery every 6 weeks or so for several years. In all that time I have never had a missing item or a substitution but I’ve often had issues with items arriving damaged due to the way they have been packed. Last nights delivery was a good example as a bag of frozen sweetcorn arrived ripped, meaning that much of it was loose in the carrier bag.
It hasnt always been the case, but nowadays I have no problem finding a convenient £1.99 delivery slot to which they add an extra £1.00 if I spend under £70. Not sure I could bring myself to pay a £5.00 delivery charge though.

crazycatladie · 15/09/2025 17:20

I’ve been using them for years. Hardly ever get subs or missing items. I pay £10 a month for any day any number of deliveries

BeachLifeForMe · 15/09/2025 17:34

I think you have been unlucky tbh. I've used Ocado for over a decade and they hardly ever have substitutes or missing items. The customer service is great generally. I do agree with you on the prices though. I've taken to buying what I can in person, mainly from Aldi, and doing a smaller Ocado shop every other week for stuff I struggle to source locally. I am on maternity leave so have more time and less money than usual!

If it’s me you’re asking, then I don’t think you quite understand. I ordered a joint of pork. When my order was delivered they didn’t deliver the pork or a substitute. I complained as I’d paid £5 and spent £150 but then I had to go shopping to buy some meat.

IHTH
